History
Andorra has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest six times, debuting in the 2004 contest. Interest in the contest had been great for a long time, despite the local Andorran broadcaster, Ràdio i Televisió d’Andorra (RTVA), not showing the contest until recent years (citizens could watch it on Spanish and French stations). A majority of the songs have so far been sung in Catalan, the national language of Andorra.
Despite the homeland interest in the competition, Andorra has never qualified for the final. In 2007, a qualification for the final was predicted, but with a 12th place finish, it just missed out. In the past RTVA held a large reality show contest to select its entry for Eurovision. From 2006, RTVA held an internal selection process to select the Andorran entry for the Eurovision Song Contest.

In the finals, Andorra has always given its 12 points to Spain, with the exception of 2007. As the two nations are neighbouring, this has done very little to dispel accusations of political voting which have been going on for a long time.

In December 2009 RTVA announced that Andorra would withdraw from the 2010 Contest due to a lack of funding for an Andorran entry. This came after RTVA submitted an entry for the contest, in case funding could be found to submit an entry. However no funding could be found, and so Andorra was forced to withdraw.

2004

Andorra was represented by Marta Roure and the song “Jugarem a estimar-nos”. The Andorran National Final was held on March 15, 2004, hosted by Pati Molné and Xavier Graset with the winner being chosen by a mixture of an “expert” jury (5/7), SMS voting in Andorra (1/7) and SMS voting in Catalonia (1/7).The one who is going to represent Andorra at the 49th Eurovision Song Contest was chosen in the televised show “12 Points”. 40 artists of the tiny country of Andorra participated in a talent scouting after which the public picked six of them by televoting to go through to the next round. About 16.000 televotes were cast, which is a lot considering the fact that Andorra only has about 72.000 inhabitants.
Before the final there was a series of quarter-finals and semi-finals. In each of the quarter-finals, 2 songs were presented with one being eliminated. In the 2 semi-finals, 3 of the winning songs from the 6 quarter-finals were presented, with one going forward to the final. The voting was a mixture of an “expert” jury (5/7), SMS voting in Andorra (1/7) and SMS voting in Catalonia (1/7). The two songs were performed by both Marta Roure and Bis a Bis. There was a separate vote to select the singer for the ESC – Marta Roure won by 5 votes to 2. Marta Roure was a clear favourite.

lyrics

I have no doubts, neither of us knows
Why we are together tonight
You don’t know my name
And truly, I don’t know your name either

Maybe it’s better to think about nothing
Let’s make the most of being alone
Let’s forget all our problems
And let’s enjoy this moment

Tonight we’ll make it our night
Tonight we’ll be able to be whatever we want
While we wait for the sun to rise

I want us to be together, that we don’t stop playing
I want you to tell me “I love you”, even though it’s not true
I want us to embrace each other, that we enjoy this moment
And play… we’ll play we’re loving each other

And when tomorrow the sun gets you out of bed
I won’t be by your side anymore
You will just be a memory
The dream of a midsummer night

2005

Andorra was represented by Marian van de Wal with the song “La mirada interior”, which was chosen over two stages organized by Andorran Television. Andorra began their search for a representative with Eurocàsting 2004, which eventually narrowed down 32 competitors into only 3. Marian van de Wal, Mar Capdevila, and Ishtar Ruiz each performed two song in the final. After a tie between Marian van de Wal and Mar Capdevila, the youngest jury member selected Marian van de Wal to represent Andorra at the 2005 Eurovision Song Contest. On January 22, Marian van de Wal performed three candidate songs in a sho hosted by Meri Picart & Josep Lluís Trabal. A combination of SMS Voting and a professional jury selected “La mirada interior”.
Marian van de Wal is originally from the Netherlands, but for the last six years, she has lived in Aldosa in the Principality of Andorra, where she runs a small hotel (Residència l’Aldosa). As well as Dutch, she speaks Catalan, English, Spanish and German. Marian has entered festivals in the Netherlands and performs in different Andorran venues.
At Eurovision, Marian and her team (which included Anabel Conde who came second for Spain at the Eurovision Song Contest 1995) wore green dresses, while the shirtless male dancers wore black pants and held black feathers. Everyone had simple choreography except the male dancers who moved around the stage in a more complex way.

lyrics

If what you want is to find the beauty of life
Go and look inside your heart,
Before turning towards the world.
If you want to awaken the mystery of life
Go and look inside your heart,
With a look inside yourself.

There is a lot more than what you can see
Go and explore inside your inner universe
There you will see that there is a force
Which is the one that makes
Everything the way it is
Radiate peace
Radiate light
Radiate harmony, be you.

If what you want is to find the beauty of life
Go and look inside your heart,
Before turning towards the world.
If you want to awaken the mystery of life
Go and look inside your heart,
With a look inside yourself.

Open wide
The doors of the treasure that is hidden
Inside your heart.
Have no doubt
Bathed in the calm
Of the clear water
Where you will find the essence of the real you

Look inside

If what you want is to find the beauty of life
Go and look inside your heart,
Before turning towards the world.
If you want to awaken the mystery of life
Go and look inside your heart,
With a look inside yourself.

Open your heart your heart to the world, and you will see
That a look inside yourself can do everything.

2006

Andorra’s entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2006 was chosen in an internal selection by national broadcaster RTVA. From over 44 candidates, the selectors chose Jenny, with the song “Sense tu” (Without you), which they described as similar to the music of artists such as Sam Brown and Anastacia.
Jenny was born in Asturias, Spain, and is a student of music under Helen Rowson in Barcelona. She is a new artist in both Spain and Andorra, with no previous commercial success in either country. The producer of this, as well as the 2005 entry, was Rafael Artesero.
Not having advanced to the final in 2005, Andorra had to compete in the semifinal in 2006 as well. The song was performed in Catalan at the Eurovision Song Contest, despite the fact that both previous Andorran entries, also performed in Catalan, fared quite poorly. Jenny failed to qualify to the final as well, actually finishing last of the 23 semifinal contestants.

lyrics

I’ve never felt before At the very end of the
road, Now I know that’s where I am. There’s
nothing we can save I know that now I’ve lost
the match I’m at the end. And I know there’s no
answer. I’ll find some way To leave this world
without you Without you Without you From heaven
I’ve sunk down to hell Without you Without you,
The nights are so long, Alone in my bed, Without
you Without you I don’t know how I can escape I
want to get away from reality Forget my past
Just walk on Although I know that in the end
I’ll win.

Forgetting you makes me feel so bad It’s
difficult not to remember what has passed,
Knowing that what awaits me is very hard Without
you by my side I know I cannot dream, The past
is gone and won’t come back I must look forward
I must learn to love without you

Without you Without you From heaven I’ve sunk
down to hell Without you Without you, The nights
are so long Alone in my bed Without you Without
you

I don’t know how I can escape I want to get away
from reality Forget my past Just walk on
Although I know that in the end I’ll win.
Without you Without you From heaven I’ve sunk down
to hell Without you Without you, I’ve lost the
match Forgetting what I am Without you Without
you

Now I know I can escape I can get away from
reality Forget my past Just walk on. Although
you know that in the end I’ve won. Without you
Without you Without you.

2007

Andorra chose their entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2007 using an internal selection called ‘Projecte Eurovisió’. Radio i Televisió d’Andorra (RTVA) confirmed that the Andorran representative at the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest was the young punk-rock band Anonymous with their song “Salvem el món” (Save The World). Anonymous beat off competition from over eighty other candidates, and were unanimously selected by a 10-member jury.
The song was premiered on March 1 on a special gala broadcast by Andorra Televisió from the Auditori Claror del Centre Cultural i de Congressos Lauredià in the town of Sant Julia de Loria.
Anonymous took part in the semi-final of Eurovision on May 10. They performed in the 21st spot. Despite being one of the favorites, they just missed the final with a 12th position. It is suggested they failed because of political voting, as only songs from Eastern Europe progressed to the final. It led to rumours of an Andorran withdrawal in 2008.

lyrics

Left, right, up and down, turned upside down
That’s how we treat the world right now
Can’t hide the fact that it’s happening

Left, right, up and down, turned upside down
That’s how we treat the world right now
Can’t hide the fact that it’s happening

We can do our world some good
We can make a change, that’s what we should
Time will tell us, but we must act now

Left, right, up and down, turned upside down
That’s how we treat the world right now
Can’t hide the fact that it’s happening

We can do our world some good
We can make a change, that’s what we should
Time will tell us, but we must act now

Si vols pots fer-ho, podem canviar-ho
Transforma la realitat
We still can act, but we don’t react
‘Cause we only care about what we have
About what we have
(One two, one two, one two three four)

2008

The small principality of Andorra selected its participant for Eurovision Song Contest 2008 by using an internal selection. This selection process was criticized by the Association of Andorran Musicians (ASMA) who believed that abandoning the national selection process in favor of an internal selection effectively blocks the public participation of Andorran artists.Nevertheless, RTVA announced that Andorra would be represented by former Operación Triunfo contestant, Gisela. On 10 December 2007, the Andorran television broadcaster held a press conference to present Gisela and to announce that the Jordi Cubino composed “Casanova” would be the Andorran theme in Belgrade.
At Eurovision, Andorra took part in the first semi-final on 20 May 2008. “Casanova” was sung in English with one line in Catalan. Gisela stated that the Eurovision performance would be “innovative and surprising” and that the song would receive a promotional tour across Europe.Andorra was not among the ten countries that qualified for the final, placing 16th with 22 points.

lyrics

A thousand stars were shining their light in the night skies
You and me, a magical moment in your eyes (Casanova)
Lost in love, I’d waited a lifetime to find you
The stars above, were burning so bright to remind you (Casanova)

Boom, boom, boom my heart still goes crazy
When I think of you…

Oh Casanova
I thought love would last forever
That we’d always stay together
Can’t you feel it in your heart?

Oh Casanova
In a fairytale I found you
I’m alive when I’m around you
I can’t live if we’re apart

A simple song, can bring back the past to remind me
now you’re gone and all the good times behind me (Casanova)

Boom, boom, boom my heart still goes crazy
When I think of you…

Oh Casanova
I thought love would last forever
That we’d always stay together
Can’t you feel it in your heart?

Oh Casanova
In a fairytale I found you
I’m alive when I’m around you
I can’t live if we’re apart

2009

Andorra participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2009, as previously confirmed by Andorran broadcaster Ràdio i Televisió d’Andorra (RTVA).
After many disappointing results since Andorra’s debut in 2004, on top of Andorra’s poor 15th place in the semi at the 2008 contest, RTVA announced in June 2008 that they had not decided on whether or not they would be present at the 2009 contest. However, on 10 September it was announced by RTVA that they would be present at Eurovision 2009, announcing a new proposal for a national final that would be used to select the Andorran representative.
The winner of the national final was Susanne Georgi with the song “La teva decisió”, and she will be the sixth Andorran Eurovision entry, competing in the first semi-final on 12 May 2009.Georgi failed to reach the final becoming the sixth Andorran eurovision entrant to miss the grand final.
The Andorran national final was held on February 4, 2009 at the Apolo Andorra Hall in Andorra la Vella, hosted by Meri Picart. Three songs by different artists competed to represent Andorra at the Eurovision Song Contest 2009, and the winner was selected by a 50/50 mix of SMS and jury voting. The winner of the final was Susanne Georgi with “La teva decisió”, receiving 66% of the SMS vote and 47% of the jury vote.
