History
Azerbaijan made its debut at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2008, after İctimai Televiziya (İTV) became an active member of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).Azerbaijan is the last country in the Caucasus to participate: Armenia was the first one, in 2006, followed by Georgia in 2007.
Azerbaijan’s first try at Eurovision proved to be successful as the country qualified for the final from the first semi-final and came 8th with 132 points in the final evening.Previously, another broadcaster, AzTV, wanted to participate in 2007, but EBU rules did not allow this as AzTV was not an active member of the EBU.
Azerbaijan’s first Eurovision performance by Elnur and Samir made it in the top ten placed at number 8 with 132 points. In 2009 Azerbaijan achieved an improvement on their 2008 debut, coming third and receiving 207 points with the song “Always”, performed by duo AySel & Arash.
On 14 May 2011, Azerbaijan won the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 with Running Scared song by Eldar & Nigar.
Since the introduction of the semi-finals, Azerbaijan and Italy are the only two countries to place within the top 10 every year that they have competed.

2008

Azerbaijan’s selection for an entry at the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 took place in the form of a national selection on 2 February 2008. Initially, the Azeri broadcaster held castings calls for artists interested to represent the nation at the international competition. Behind closed doors, several candidates were selected by a jury to advance to the next round. These candidates were condensed to three participants: Elnur Hüseynov, Aynur Isgandarli, and the band Unformal.
The national final started at 17:30 CET and the winners press conference was set to start at 19:30 CET.[5] The winner of the national competition was decided by a combination of jury and televoting results, however, the selection determined the performer; it was an option for the song to be changed.
The winner was Elnur Hüseynov feat. Samir Javadzadeh with the song Day After Day.
Azerbaijan made its début in the Eurovision taking part in the first semi-final on 20 May 2008. It qualified as the fourth country pulled out and will be in the Eurovision final on Sunday 24 May 2008. Azerbaijan was drawn 20th in the Final. In the final the Azerbaijani duet Elnur Hüseynov and Samir Javadzadeh finished 8th with 132 points.

lyrics

For peace we pray
Save us from all fears
Oh Lord, save us

For the perfect angel of love
Melody of song
To be dependent on yourself
Choose the right way of life

Our dreams can play with us
Even if we think that we keep control
If you’re searching for resolves
Be ready for the tolls, yeah…

Show us the right way
Day after day
All fears we must forget
Then better world we’ll get

For the perfect angel of love
Melody of song
To be dependent on yourself
Choose the right way of life

Our dreams can play with us
Even if we think that we keep control
If you’re searching for resolves
Be ready for the tolls, tolls

Show us the right way
Day after day
All fears we must forget
Then better world we’ll get

Then better world we’ll get
Then better world we’ll get

Day after day
All fears we must forget
Then better world we’ll get
Then better world we’ll get
Then better world we’ll get
Then better world we’ll get

2009

Azerbaijan participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2009, making their second appearance at the contest. Arash and Aysel Teymurzadeh represented Azerbaijan at the contest as a duo after Teymurzadeh was internally selected by the Azeri broadcaster.
Azerbaijan’s entry was regarded as a favourite and had been predicted by many as being likely to finish in the top five in the final.
Since Azerbaijan is not one of the “Big Four” nor the host of the 2009 contest, it had to compete in one of the two semi-finals. According to the draw for semi-finals, Azerbaijan competed in Semi-final 2 on May 14. The country was seeded 11th in the order of performance. During the Final on May 16, the Azerbaijani duo finished third with 207 points. Televoters awarded the Azerbaijani entry 2nd place, while the juries ranked Azerbaijan 8th. The combined result was the third place.
Azerbaijani entry received votes from 34 out of 41 countries of the Contest, Azerbaijan excluded. Azerbaijan’s third place is considered a great success for the country, which participated in the contest only for the second time.
AySel & Arash became the winners of the 4th Annual ESC Radio Awards in the category of the Best Group.
After the finish of Eurovision 2009, some Belarusian media reported that unknown people allegedly paid Belarusian students to vote for Azerbaijan, and supposedly even transported them to the Belarusian-Lithuanian border in 10 buses. The cost of whole action is claimed to be about 55 million roubles. They voted for Azerbaijan with the help of Belarusian SIM cards and then received Lithuanian cards to do the same. “Always” received high votes from Belarus (10) and Lithuania (5), being even ahead of Russia in Belarus. The head of the Azerbaijani diaspora in Belarus, which numbers tens of thousands of people, Natik Baghirov said that he did not know anything about the action, and that the song received support from the entire Europe, not just Belarus and Lithuania, while Sergey Malinovsky, Belorussian jury member of the Eurovision, openly doubted that such vote irregularity could take place, and believed that the Azerbaijani song received public support because of its catchy melody and good performance

lyrics
Always on my mind, always in my heart

I’ve been waiting for you night after night
Like a shadow, staying close to the light
Suddenly you stand beside me
And I see a million burning stars

You are always on my mind, always in my heart
And I can hear you call my name on a mountain high
Always on my mind, always in my dreams
I wanna hold you close to me, always, all the time

I believe I’m addicted to you
In your eyes I see dreams comin’ true
Finally I have found you
And now I will never let you go, no

You are always on my mind, always in my heart
And I can hear you call my name on a mountain high
Always on my mind, always in my dreams
I wanna hold you close to me, always, all the time

Always on my mind, always in my heart
And I can hear you call my name on a mountain high
Always on my mind, always in my dreams
I wanna hold you close to me, always, all the time

Always on my mind, always in my heart
Always on my mind, always in my dreams
Always, all the time

lyrics

You are my man, you are my half
Tell me what’s happening
I know something’s wrong
I can tell when you lie
I can tell you’ve stopped trying

And these last three weeks passed and we barely talked
I think I know and it’s breaking my heart
Am I in or am I out?

Can I love you forever through this?
Can I trust in you forever through this?
I don’t know how to stop, how to stop

These teardro-o-ops
That drip drop, drip drop
Drip drop, drip drop
Whoah… whoah…

These teardro-o-ops
That drip drop, drip drop
Drip drop, drip drop
Whoah… whoah…

Tell me where have you been? Why are you late?
You smell like lipstick again
Come on, answer my question
Say something
Why are you acting out?

Oh, say it’s in my head

Can I love you forever through this?
Can I trust in you forever through this?
I don’t know how to stop, how to stop

These teardro-o-ops
That drip drop, drip drop
Drip drop, drip drop
Whoah… whoah…

I don’t wanna cry
I don’t wanna hear your name
If this is where it ends
I don’t wanna run
Run away from myself
And be lost again…

(Can I love you forever through this?)
Oh no no no… oh no no no…
Can I trust in you forever through this?

I don’t know (These teardro-o-ops)
I don’t know (That drip drop, drip drop)
I don’t know (Drip drop, drip drop)
Whoah… whoah…

lyrics

Oh oh, oh… oh, oh… oh, oh…
Oh oh, oh… oh, oh… oh, oh…

Come to me, come to me tonight
Oh God, I need you, anyway
Baby, I just wanna be, be around you all the time
Oh God, I need you, oh…

I’m running, I’m scared tonight
I’m running, I’m scared of life
I’m running, I’m scared of breathing
‘Cause I adore you

I’m running, I’m scared tonight
I’m running, I’m scared of breathing
‘Cause I adore you

Come to me, come to me a bit more
Oh God, I need you
There’s nothing left for me to say

So rest on me darling, stay forever more
Oh God, I need you, I need you

I’m running, I’m scared tonight
I’m running, I’m scared of life
I’m running, I’m scared of breathing
‘Cause I adore you

I’m running, I’m scared tonight
I’m running, I’m scared of breathing
‘Cause I adore you

Oh, what I wouldn’t give away
To be your shelter and keep you safe
Keep you safe

I’m running, I’m scared tonight
I’m running, I’m scared of life
I’m running, I’m scared of breathing
‘Cause I adore you

I’m running, I’m scared tonight
I’m running, I’m scared of breathing
‘Cause I adore you

And I’m running
And I’m running scared
‘Cause I adore you

2012

Azerbaijan participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 as host in Baku and selected their entry in a series of competitive heats and a national final Milli seçim turu, which was organised by Azerbaijani broadcaster İTV. Azerbaijan was represented by Sabina Babayeva in the grand final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2012, on 26 May 2012, with the song “When the Music Dies”, as the 13th act. She came fourth overall with 150 points.
A total of 119 songs were submitted to İTV. The selection process was the same as in 2011, with the exception that the number of the contestants was reduced to 72 singers.
The song “When the Music Dies” was selected internally by jury. Written by Swedish composers Anders Bagge, Sandra Bjurman, Stefan Örn, and Johan Kronlund, the song is a symbiosis of Western and traditional Azeri tunes

lyrics

You, you are my best friend
You are my everything, so don’t leave me now
You, you are the best of me
The reason that I believe, so don’t leave me now

And I try to keep us alive
But you’re cold, cold, cold
Now every second that my heart skips, it ends

But I still wanna keep us alive
But it’s cold, cold, cold, cold when the music dies
It’s all black and white and there’s no sunrise
When the music dies

No you, you can’t even look at me
Still not gonna speak to me
Whoa oh oh oh…

And I try to keep us alive
But you’re cold, cold, cold
Now every second that my heart skips, it ends

But I try to keep us alive
But it’s cold, cold, cold, cold
When the music dies (Cold, cold, cold)
It gets cold and there’s no sunrise

So cold, now every second that my heart skips, it ends

I try to keep us alive
But you’re cold, cold, so cold
Every second my heartbeat ends

Still I try to keep us alive
But you’re cold, cold, cold
When the music dies
