History
Belarus has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest nine times, debuting in 2004. The country entered the contest in the same year that semi-finals began to be used to determine who would compete in the final. Belarus has so far managed to qualify for the final twice in 2007 with Dmitry Koldun and 2010 with 3+2. After the 2009 edition Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko told that it was necessary to completely replace the current working team behind Belarus’ Eurovision entry. Lukashenko pointed out his frustrations over divisions within the team.
Belarus every year from the moment of the debut in 2004 has given points to Russia the highest point of 12 points, except 2009 when it gave to the 12th representative of Norway of the Belarusian origin, and to Russia 8 and in 2011 Belarus stated Russia the lowest point in history – 5.

lyrics

I’m no stay-at-home, and heady
Is the quest and venture mode
And the road is there to tread it
All-dimensional road

Round I go
Desperate to reach new horizons
Circles grow
But you

You’re my pier
Centre in my life
My Galileo
I rotate to you
I’m here

Wind is high and branches rattle
On the shattered window pane
And the dust has not yet settled
I’m leaving again

Round I go
Desperate to reach new horizons
Circles grow
But you

You’re my pier
Centre in my life
My Galileo
I rotate to you
I’m here
I’m here again

(Lay lala, lay lala, lay lala)
(Lay lala, lay lala, lay lala)
My Galileo…
(Lay lala, lay lala, lay lala)
(Lay lala, lay lala, lay lala)

You’re my pier
Centre in my life
My Galileo
I rotate to you
I’m here
I’m here again

I’m here again

2005

Belarus selected their song in two stages, the first allowing the public to choose, and the second requiring a jury to make a final decision. The first round of the selection took place on December 25 and contained 14 songs which the Belarusian public heard and voted for. The top three songs of this selection continued to the second round where on February 1, a professional jury chose Angelica Agurbash to perform the song “Boys and Girls”. Angelica decided that the song she was chosen with would most likely not fare too well at Eurovision so she turned to alternatives. Israeli performer Svika Pick offered the song “Show Me Your Love”, while Nikos Terzis and Nektarios Tyrakis offered Angelica “Love Me Tonight”. Consequently, Angelica chose “Love Me Tonight” and performed a different song from the one originally chosen for her.
Agurbash is a model, singer, actress, and artistic performer in Belarus. Angelica has had titles such as the first Miss Belarus title, Miss Photo USSR, and Mrs Russia 2002.
At Eurovision, Angelica created a spectacle out of her performance. With entertaining choreography and three costume changes, Belarus had one of the most appealing song presentations in 2005. At first Angelica wore a golden sheet, which was quickly pulled off to reveal a Victorian style dress, which went with the theme of the attire her male dancers wore. Close to the end of the song, the Victorian dress gets pulled off to reveal a golden skin-tight body suit.
lyrics

I wish you could be near me
I seek your eyes to thrill me
So take your chance and feel me
I am ready now

I dream of you by my side
Move closer, baby
You’ve got a place in my mind
I’m with you, baby
Do it to me one more time
I’m waiting, baby
Give me the time of my life

Love me tonight
And I’ll love you forever
It’s no sin, it’s no crime
That I want you mine

Love me tonight
I need you more than ever
You can make me feel right
Just love me tonight
Love me tonight

I’ve got no hesitation
It’s my infatuation
Your touch is an obsession
I’m addicted now

I dream of you by my side
Move closer, baby
You’ve got a place in my mind
I’m with you, baby
Do it to me one more time
I’m waiting, baby
Give me the time of my life

Love me tonight
I need you more than ever
You can make me feel right
Just love me tonight

Do it to me one more time
Give me the time of my life
Give me the time of my life

Love me tonight
I need you more than ever
You can make me feel right
Just love me tonight
Love me tonight
Love me tonight

Love you forever
And we’ll be together
So just stay with me for the night

2006

Belarus’s entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2006 was chosen using two phases. The Belarusian broadcaster BT staged a final allowing viewers to choose the top 3 songs in the selection. Of these three, the winner was chosen by a jury behind the scenes. They chose Polina Smolova with her song Mama. The song is an upbeat pop song that resembles the styles of Michael Jackson. Polina attempted to represent Belarus last year, and although she was the public’s favourite, she didn’t win because she was not selected by the jury. The song was written by Andrey Kostiugov and composed by Sergey Sukhomlin, and has been renamed Mum for the contest in Athens.
Polina Smolova started her singing career with participations in children folk bands. Belarus scored only ten points in the semifinal, finishing 22nd, and did not qualify for the final.

lyrics

All I tell you, Ma – my heart on fire
Say me no more that he’s an arrant liar
I feel so safe ’cause I know he’s good
The guys before him were a sort of junk food

Mama, Mama, Mama
Can’t you see how I miss him?
Mama, Mama, Mama
Yes, I need only him
Mama, Mama, Mama
Can’t you see how I love him?
So by now my doubts are over
I know for sure that he’s my dream

I beg you, Ma – some comprehension
We got like strangers due to the tension
Just remember yourself in your teens
And all years after, here is what it means:

Mama, Mama, Mama
Can’t you see how I miss him?
Mama, Mama, Mama
Yes, I need only him
Mama, Mama, Mama
Can’t you see how I love him?
So by now my doubts are over
I know for sure that he’s my…

Never say me, Mama, he is too dangerous
Love can make us broken, but it makes us fly
Let me love him, Mama, don’t sigh, don’t cry
Be my friend, oh Mama, the passion is right

Mama, Mama, Mama
Can’t you see how I miss him?
Mama, Mama, Mama
Yes, I need only him
Mama, Mama, Mama
Can’t you see how I love him?
So by now my doubts are over
I know for sure that he’s my…

Mama, Mama, Mama
Mama, Mama, Mama
Mama, Mama, Mama
So by now my doubts are over
I know for sure that he’s my…

Mama, Mama, Mama
Can’t you see how I miss him?
Mama, Mama, Mama
Yes, I need only him
Mama, Mama, Mama
Can’t you see how I love him?
So by now my doubts are over
I know for sure that he’s my…
I know for sure that he’s my…
I know for sure that he’s my dream

2007

Belarus chose Dmitry Koldun with the song “Work Your Magic” to represent the nation at the Eurovision Song Contest 2007 in Helsinki, Finland. Using the Eurofest 2007 format on 15 December 2006, televoting narrowed down fifteen performers to Dmitry Koldun, selected by televoting, and Diana Gurtskaya and The Project, selected by the professional jury. The three competitors entered the superfinal where they could change their song if they wished. On 22 January 2007, the three performed their song in front of a strict government jury, which decided that Dmitry Koldun was the most suitable performer to represent Belarus. The song was written by Karen Kavaleryan and composed by Philip Kirkorov.
At Eurovision, Dmitry Koldun will drop his first name and perform as Koldun, which is the Russian word for “magician”. As Belarus failed to qualify from the semi-final for the third time in a row in 2006, Koldun had to compete in the semi-final on 10 May. The Belarusian entry was performed fourth, following Cyprus and preceding Iceland.
Belarus finished 4th in the semi-final, and therefor qualified for the final on May 12, where they performed 3rd. Finally, the entry received a 6th place with 145 points.
lyrics

Welcome to the night and you will see
You’ve got the magic power
I am on my way, I keep the key to your tower

You can serve me someting really hot
Call it love or madness
But you’ll get the best of what I’ve got

Work your magic
I never wanna lose this feeling
I am able and I’m willing
Yes, I’m willing

Work your magic
You set my beating heart in motion
When you cast your loving potion
Loving potion

Work your magic
I never wanna lose this feeling
I am able and I’m willing
Yes, I’m willing

Work your magic
You set my beating heart in motion
When you cast your loving potion over me

Baby, you can put your spell on me
Makin’ it slow and steady
Maybe I can solve your mystery
Are you ready?

We are standing closely skin to skin
Playin’ a very old game
In this game of love, you always win

Work your magic
I never wanna lose this feeling
I am able and I’m willing
Yes, I’m willing

Work your magic
You set my beating heart in motion
When you cast your loving potion over me

When you cast your loving potion over me

So you work your magic
Baby, work your magic
Keep my heart forever bound

Work your magic
I never wanna lose this feeling
I am able and I’m willing
Yes, I’m willing

Work your magic
You set my beating heart in motion
When you cast your loving potion over me

2008

Belarus chose their entry to the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 through a public selection, organized by BTRC, that took part in two phases. The competition “Eurofest” consists of a semifinal round on 21 December 2007, and a final a month later on 21 January 2008. The televote winner, Ruslan Alehno, was secured a place in the final, while the jury selected the bands Litesound and Po Glazam, and singer Gunesh Abasova. These four competitors had the choice to proceed with the song they performed in the semifinal or choose a different song. In the final round, the decision fell in the hands of the jury who also tooke into consideration the televoting results when they choose the winner. Ruslan Alekhno won with the song Hasta la vista.
The semifinal of Eurofest took place at the BTRC television studios. The professional jury consisted of Mikhail Finberg, Anatoliy Yarmolenko, Vasily Rainchik, Yadviga Poplavskaya, Irina Dorofeeva, and others. After the conclusion of the fifteen songs, viewers were able to televote for their favorites free of charge. Originally, two or three performers are chosen, however the jury decided to include three artists in addition to the televote winner creating a total of four.
lyrics

You shone at me like a blinding star
I’ve just never seen such a light so far
All my days were fairy tales

I begged you to look in my loving eyes
But you were as cold as arctic ice
And your laugh has killed my love

The story is close to the final cut
It won’t be the end, but a running start
So don’t be upset and don’t ask me why
I say goodbye

Hasta la vista, baby
I gonna miss you, maybe
You can be blissfully happy
Though it’s not fair

Hasta la vista, baby
I gonna miss you, maybe
Hasta la vista, blame me
But I don’t care

Hasta la vista

No way to repair the broken glass
There’s nothing to share nor to discuss
Now I see, you’re not for me

You’ve cast me away to a desert shore
You’ve shattered my heart, now you keep the score
Have a rest, you’ve done your best

The story is close to the final cut
It won’t be the end, but a running start
So don’t you pretend you can’t get it why
I say goodbye

Hasta la vista, baby
I gonna miss you, maybe
You can be blissfully happy
Though it’s not fair

Hasta la vista, baby
I gonna miss you, maybe
Hasta la vista, blame me
But I don’t care

Hasta la vista
Hasta la vista

2009

The semi-final of Eurofest 2009 was held on 15 December 2008. A professional jury selected five artists to qualify for the final in January. The finalists had an opportunity to change their selected songs before performing in the final again.
The five qualifiers from the semi-final competed again in a national final on 19 January, a show held at the Sports Palace in Minsk, and presented by singers Anastasija Tihanovich and Dmitry Koldun, with Koldun being the 2007 Belorussian entry, coming sixth. The contest was won by Petr Elfimov, with his rock song “Eyes That Never Lie”. He received a landslide number of votes, receiving 11475 votes in total, over 4000 more than runner-up Gunesh.
A new version of “Eyes That Never Lie” was made after winning the Belarusian national final, which was produced by Tero Kinnunen at the Finnvox Studios in Helsinki, both known for their associations with symphonic metal band Nightwish. Belarus competed in the first semi final where they failed to qualify, finishing 13th of 18 participants, scoring 25 points.

lyrics

I was wandering alone
I was turning to stone
I was going insane
When you came into my life

You chased sorrow away
You changed night into day
You cured all of my pain
With your eyes that never lie

All my life I waited
Thinking I would never fly
Then you looked and saw my wings
With your eyes that never lie

You are my desert and well
You are my heaven and hell
You are my reason to be
My love song, my battle cry

I know I will be whole
While I keep in my soul
The light shining on me
From your eyes that never lie

All my life I waited
Thinking I would never fly
Then you looked and saw my wings
With your eyes that never lie

Oh, my darling angel
Guide me through this barren sky
If I’m lost I’ll see the way
In your eyes that never lie

2010

An internal selection was held by the broadcaster after a public call for song submissions, and after 41 entries were received the band 3+2 were selected. The band will perform the song “Butterflies” at the contest, having changed their song on 19 March from their initial choice “Far Away”.
Belarus has qualified to the final of the contest twice: in 2007, when Koldun placed sixth for the country with “Work Your Magic”, and in 2010. All other Belarusian entries have been relegated in the semi-final stage, with Belarus’ worst performance coming in 2006, when Polina Smolova finished in 22nd position in the semi-final with “Mum”, receiving only ten points in total.
Shortly after the 2009 Contest had finished (where Belarus, represented by Petr Elfimov, had finished 13th in the semi-final), the Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko expressed his dissatisfaction over the management of BTRC’s organisation for the Contest. He expressed his frustrations over divisions within the team, finding it necessary to completely replace the 2009 team for 2010.and had ruled that ONT should take over preparation for Eurovision from BTRC.
On 25 February the band 3+2 were selected by the broadcaster to represent Belarus at the Contest with the song “Far Away”. Before the song was submitted to the BTRC internal selection, the song and the group had come second in ONT’s “Musical Court” (as Artyom Mihalenko, Elgiazar Farashyan and Yulia Shisko). On 19 March, three days before the deadline to submit songs to the Contest’s organisers, it was announced that 3+2 had changed their song for the contest, and would now perform the song “Butterflies” at the contest. The song was composed by Russian producer Maxim Fadeev, with lyrics by Malka Chaplin.
Belarus will compete in the first semi-final of the contest on 25 May, performing in the second half of the draw. Belarus was one of the ten qualifiers to the final, and will perform in the final on 29 May, for the first time since 2007 and only the second time ever.
lyrics

I’m gonna tell you what ‘s inside my soul
We are so fragile, just like melting snow
We’ve got to come to see the beauty of love
And imagine, and imagine, just imagine

And we’re like butterflies flying to the sun
The sun will never let us look inside
I believe that this’ll be opened up
But at the right time
Heartfully just wait for it, it will come

And even if you often were so wrong
And you denied the miracle’s possible
But you have got to see it anyway
And imagine, and imagine, just imagine

And we’re like butterflies flying to the sun
The sun will never let us look inside
I believe that this’ll be opened up
But at the right time
Heartfully just wait for it, it will come

And we’re like butterflies flying to the sun (The sun)
The sun will never let us look inside (Look inside, I believe)
I believe that this’ll be opened up
But at the right time
Heartfully just wait for it
And all the secrets will come, come out

2011

Belarus participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 in Düsseldorf, Germany, selecting their entry internally for the second time in a row.Serbian newspaper Blic reported that Serbian producer Željko Joksimović, who represented Serbia and Montenegro in 2004 and produced the Bosnian and Herzegovinian song in 2006 and the Serbian song in 2008, was chosen to write the 2011 Belarusian Eurovision entry for Irina Dorofeeva; official confirmation has been made.
Just like 2010, the Belarusian representative in the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest will be internally chosen by an expert jury. Until 21 February, interested singers can send in their potential entries. The jury will then evaluate all songs and pick a winner by 1 March. There are no limitations regarding the nationality of the singers and songwriters taking part in the open selection. On 28 February it was announced that Anastasia Vinnikova will represent the country with the song “Born in Byelorussia”. Later on 3 March it was announced that the lyrics of the song will be changed to “I Am Belarusian” as the song quoted memories from the Soviet Union period. However on 12 March the song was withdrawn, after it was discovered that it was performed in public in the summer of 2010, and was replaced with the new song “I Love Belarus”.Belarus performed sixteenth in the second semi-final of the contest on 12 May. Belarus placed fourteenth with 45 points and failed to qualify for the final.
lyrics

Yeah yeah yeah yeah…
Yeah yeah yeah yeah…
Yeah yeah yeah yeah…
Yeah yeah yeah yeah…

I’m feeling great and it’s easy to be strong
When all the hearts keep on beating as one
The sky is blue and I’m writing a new song
Saying that I’m free, friendly and young

I have so much and I’m ready to show you
Let’s come together, so here is my hand
We’re gonna fly watching lakes in their full view
Fields are full of gold, and it’s all my land

I love Belarus, got it deep inside
I love Belarus, feel it in my mind
And I wanna see the sun shining from above
You will always be the one, I can’t get enough

I love Belarus, got it deep inside
I love Belarus, feel it in my mind
And I wanna see the sun shining from above
And I’m gonna every day give you all my love

So here I go and I’m ready to rise up
Just like a star guiding me through the night
I’ve got no fear and I will never give up
Love is all we need and it’s our light

I love Belarus, got it deep inside
I love Belarus, feel it in my mind
And I wanna see the sun shining from above
You will always be the one, I can’t get enough

I love Belarus, got it deep inside
I love Belarus, feel it in my mind
And I wanna see the sun shining from above
And I’m gonna every day give you all my love

Time will not erase courage and my grace
I’m stronger every day, I say…
(I love Belarus, I love Belarus)
You will always be the one, I can’t get enough

I love Belarus, got it deep inside
I love Belarus, feel it in my mind
And I wanna see the sun shining from above
And I’m gonna every day give you all my love

I love Belarus

Belarus will participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 and will select their entry through the national selection Eurofest 2012, consisting of a semi-final and a final, organised by the Belorussian broadcaster BTRC. Litesound performing the song “We Are the Heroes” will represent Belarus in Baku. It was written by Vladimir, Dmitry Karyakin.
On 18 October 2011, BTRC started the call for songs for their national selection Eurofest 2012. After a two years break, the national selection Eurofest is back to the Belarusian national selection. Applications will be accepted from 1–25 November 2011.After that, a jury will choose 15 entries to be presented in a national semi-final, which is supposed to be held on 21 December 2011. Five entries will advance to the final, which is set to take place on 31 January 2012.On February 24, 2012, the Belorussian president conducted an investigation leading to Lanskaya’s “unfair” win in Eurofest 10 days earlier. It was rumored that she and her producers had rigged the televoting giving her 12 points making her the winner. The president ordered an immediate investigation and was later confirmed to be true. Therefore, on February 26, Alyona Lanskaya was disqualified. lyrics

When the night is falling from the sky
Just keep driving on a highway
When the world is deaf to all your cries
Just keep going, you’ll be there someday

You’re not alone, we’re against them all
Hold on to me, I’ll never let you fall
Even if someday all hope is gone
I will not give up

Whatever’s standing in my way, we’ll make it through the day
‘Cause we are the winners, we are the heroes
We’re breaking down the walls, we’re gonna hit them all
‘Cause we are believers, we are the dreamers

No matter what they say, no matter what they do
I’ll make it alright, I’ll make it for you
We’re breaking down the walls
We are the heroes

As I stand beneath the starry sky
I just lose faith in gravity
And it feels like I can learn to fly
Bring to life all my fantasies

You’re not alone, we’re against them all
Hold on to me, I’ll never let you fall
Even if someday all hope is gone
I will not give up

Whatever’s standing in my way, we’ll make it through the day
‘Cause we are the winners, we are the heroes
We’re breaking down the walls, we’re gonna hit them all
‘Cause we are believers, we are the dreamers

No matter what they say, no matter what they do
I’ll make it alright, I’ll make it for you
We’re breaking down the walls
We are the heroes, we are the heroes

Whatever’s standing in my way, we’ll make it through the day
‘Cause we are the winners, we are the heroes
We’re breaking down the walls, we’re gonna hit them all
‘Cause we are believers, we are the dreamers

No matter what they say, no matter what they do
I’ll make it alright, I’ll make it for you
We’re breaking down the walls
We are the heroes
