History
Croatia has participated at the Eurovision Song Contest 20 times, participating every year since their debut in 1993. Together with Sweden and Malta, and the 5 countries that are for financial reasons entitled to take part every year, Croatia is one of the few countries that has not missed a contest since 1993, when the lowest scorers each year got relegated. It is also only one of two countries, along with Spain (excluding recent debut countries) that has not missed a participation since their debut.
Croatia had previously been represented at Eurovision between 1961 and 1991 in the form of Yugoslavia. Croatia was the most successful republic of Yugoslavia at Eurovision, with 13 of the 26 Yugoslav entries being Croatian, and Yugoslavia’s only winner, Riva with “Rock Me” in 1989, being Croatian. The Eurovision Song Contest 1990 was held in Zagreb as a result.
The Croatian national public broadcaster, Hrvatska radiotelevizija (HRT), had organised a festival to select a Croatian representative for the 1992 Contest. Had HRT been a member of the EBU in time for the contest, the first Croatian entry at Eurovision would have been the band Magazin with “Aleluja”.
Croatia’s first entry was in 1993. The country was represented by the band Put, with the song “Don’t Ever Cry” which was, despite the English title, performed in Croatian. The song came third in the “Qualification for Millstreet”, thus enabling the participation in the contest. Croatia’s best position, as of 2010, has been 4th, having achieved this position in 1996, when Maja Blagdan represented Croatia with “Sveta ljubav”, and in 1999, when Doris Dragović sang “Marija Magdalena”.
Famous Croatian singer Tereza Kesovija represented Monaco at the Eurovision Song Contest 1966 and the famous Croatian group Feminnem represented Bosnia and Herzegovina at the Eurovision Song Contest 2005 with “Call me”.
In 2000s, Croatia has only once qualified in the top 10, in 2002. Croatia has failed to qualify in recent contests, most notably in 2007 with Dado Topić, which is also the worst Croatian result on the ESC, but also in 2010, 2011, and with Nina Badrić, one of the most famous singer in Croatia, in 2012.

1993

Croatia entered the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time as an independent country in 1993. The country’s first entry was by Put with the song “Don’t Ever Cry”.HRT held a national final to select the first independent Croatian entry at Eurovision. Dora 1993 was held at the Crystal Ballroom of Hotel Kvarner in Opatija on 28 February, hosted by Sanja Doležal (the lead singer of Novi fosili, the Yugoslav entry for 1987) & Frano Lasić. 15 entries competed, and the winner was decided by 11 regional juries.
The winning song was “Don’t Ever Cry”, performed by the band Put.
The Kvalifikacija za Millstreet (Qualification for Millstreet) contest was held in Ljubljana, Slovenia on 3 April at the TV studios of Slovene broadcaster Radiotelevizija Slovenija (RTV SLO). Seven countries in total competed, including Croatia, for a place in the final on 15 May 1993. Put performed second, following Bosnia and Herzegovina and preceding Estonia. The band received 52 points, placing 3rd, qualifying to the Eurovision Song Contest final alongside Slovenia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Put performed 21st at the Eurovision Song Contest 1993 in Millstreet, Ireland, following the Netherlands and preceding Spain. The group received 31 points, placing 15th of the 25 competing countries.
lyrics

Thousands of distant dreams, roses asleep in our hearts
Thousands of colorful butterflies, innocent like souls

My John is eighteen years old
Pray for him, angels’ song

Don’t ever cry, don’t ever cry
Never say goodbye, never say goodbye
Don’t ever cry, don’t ever cry
Never say goodbye, never say goodbye

My John is eighteen years old
Pray for him, angels’ song

Give us peace, give us peace
Sky of love, sky of love
Don’t ever cry, don’t ever cry
Never say goodbye, never say goodbye

Don’t ever cry. don’t ever cry
Never say goodbye, never say goodbye
Don’t ever cry, don’t ever cry
Never say goodbye, never say goodbye

Don’t ever cry, my Croatian sky

lyrics

Rain from the north is coming
The pillow smells nice
But your infidelity is hurting me
You’re not here
The morning awakens me
Who kissed you
Destroyed memories in my eyes

Someone took you away from me
You sold me
Whoa…
I’m fighting for love
But don’t have the strength
No, I don’t have the strength

You may have all the love
My soul is too tired
The biggest pain is going through my veins
But you won’t disappear from inside me
Oh… won’t disappear

You don’t love me, you don’t love me anymore
Hundred years
My love would have lasted

You may have all the love
My soul is too tired
The biggest pain is going through my veins

You may have all the love
My soul is too tired
But you won’t disappear from inside me
Oh… won’t disappear

Oo…

lyrics

Silent
Silent violin is playing
And touching my heart’s chords
Through seas and mountains
It plays to me, it plays

Silent
Silent violin is playing
Like the light of the sky’s heights
Paganini plays from the sky
It plays to me, it plays

Nostalgia, nostalgia
Travels through my soul
It bound me with you my entire life
When you’re away, she’s my home and family
Nostalgia

Nostalgia, nostalgia
Travels through my soul
It bound me with you my entire life
When you’re away, she’s my home and family
Nostalgia

Silent
Silent violin is playing
And touching my heart’s chords
Through seas and mountains
It plays to me, it plays

Nostalgia, nostalgia
Travels through my soul
It bound me with you my entire life
When you’re away, she’s my home and family
Nostalgia

Nostalgia, nostalgia
Travels through my soul
It bound me with you my entire life
When you’re away, she’s my home and family
Nostalgia

I admit it all to you, everything is meaningless without you
And while the cold rain falls down onto the city, who knows where you are
A ja ja ja ja ja ja… and you are my love, this are the times with no mercy
You’re a wild river on my path, but I love you still

Sun travels to the sea, my heart is going crazy
Give me strength, oh, holy love
Sun travels to the sea, my heart is going crazy
Give me strength, oh, holy love

I live for us, earth carries my voice
To the depths of your soul, for that’s my home, and I love you still

Sun travels to the sea, my heart is going crazy
Give me strength, oh, holy love
Sun travels to the sea, my heart is going crazy
Give me strength, (oh, holy love)

Give me strength, oh, holy love

lyrics

Awaken me

I don’t need gifts or flowers to start a day
No, I need something bigger to chase my dreams away
Don’t, don’t, don’t want rolls or coffee, not sugar nor cream
All I want is a real love, oh… someone I like

I just need a few minutes more, I’m not asking for anything more, please
Tell me countless times, I love you more than anything

Just kiss me here, here, here… kiss me
Slowly, ooh, ooh, ooh… awaken me
Again, kiss me here, here, here… kiss me
Slowly, ooh, ooh, ooh… awaken me

Hey, yeah…

I don’t need fruits or sweets to make my day
I need something bigger to chase my dreams away

I just need a few more minutes, I don’t ask for a lot, please
Tell me countless times, I love you more than anything

Just kiss me here, here, here… kiss me
Slowly, ooh, ooh, ooh… awaken me
Again, kiss me here, here, here… kiss me
Slowly, ooh, ooh, ooh… awaken me
Kiss me

Kiss me, awaken me
Touch me, seduce me
Kiss me, awaken me
Long for me, awaken me

Just kiss me here, here, here… kiss me
Slowly, ooh, ooh, ooh… awaken me
Just kiss me here, here, here… kiss me
Slowly, ooh, ooh, ooh… awaken me

I need, need you, awaken me

lyrics

Another day has passed by
Another moon has come
Silently like a dear guest
To abridge my mornings
For, the sorrow leads me
Through years, steals the dream
Till a new day dawns

May the dawn never come
May I disappear, may I cease to exist
May I not wake up without you
May the dawn never come
May I disappear, may I cease to exist
May I not wake up without you

Another day has passed by
Another moon has come
Silently like a dear guest
To abridge my mornings
For, the sorrow leads me
Through years, steals the dream
Till a new day dawns

May the dawn never come
May I disappear, may I cease to exist
May I not wake up without you
May the dawn never come
May I disappear, may I cease to exist
May I not wake up without you

May I not wake up without you
May the dawn never come
May I disappear, may I cease to exist
May I not wake up without you
May I not wake up without you

Dragović had previously represented Croatia, then part of Yugoslavia, at the 1986 contest with the song “Željo moja”.After the contest, the European Broadcasting Union (BU), the organizers of the contest, were forced to reduce Croatia’s score to 79 for the calculation of the country’s five-year average score, used to relegate country’s from the next contest. This was due to the use of synthesised male vocals on the backing track, which the EBU said broke the “spirit of the rule” in which no live vocals could be featured on backing tracks. However, overall, the original score remained the same.
lyrics

Because your love is stretching me
Has rid me of my sins
As God is my witness, I swear by my heart
That this woman knows, she belongs to you, entirely

Mary Magdalene… Mary Magdalene
Ah… Mary Magdalene… ah…

The night guided me, around the world
I told her: “Stop!” ah… “I won’t go any further”
As God is my witness, I swear by my heart
That this woman knows, she belongs to you, entirely

Mary Magdalene… Mary Magdalene
Ah… Mary Magdalene… ah…

As God is my witness, I swear by my heart
That this woman knows, she belongs to you, entirely

Mary Magdalene… Mary Magdalene
Ah… Mary Magdalene… ah…

Stay now and softly play the strings of my heart
I want you by my side, you make me feel all right
And let the fiddler play on the strings of my heart

lyrics

Since you came into my life, I’ve been touched by happiness
I feel love is all around ’cause there is no more loneliness
And there’s one thing that is true
You should know how much I love you

Love is everything I want, love is everything I need
Thinking of the day we met as sign of destiny
Love is everything I want, I believe in you and me
Let me show you what I feel because my love is real

The girl I was, I left behind, incomplete and insecure
Now I got you on my mind and I feel like I’ve been cured
And there’s one thing that is true
You should know how much I love you

Love is everything I want, love is everything I need
Thinking of the day we met as sign of destiny
Love is everything I want, I believe in you and me
Let me show you what I feel because my love is real

(Ah… ah… ah…) Whoa…

(Love is everything I want, love is everything I need)
(Thinking of the day we met as sign of destiny)
Love is everything I want, I believe in you and me
Let me show you what I feel because my love is real

(Love is everything I want, love is everything I need)
(Thinking of the day we met as sign of destiny) Thinking of the day
(Love is everything I want, I believe in you and me)
(Let me show you what I feel) because my love is real
Because my love is real

lyrics

Ah-ah

I don’t need someone
Who tells me
Whether to walk on the road
Or where to turn off

And who are you, who judges me?
You don’t need to try anymore, it’s all over now
It’s too late now to learn
You’ve lost me for too long, way too long

I’m not yours anymore
I’m not the one
Who has to suffer for being loved
I’ll be mine forever
Whether I’m bad or good
But for sure
I’ll trust myself

I don’t need someone
(To tell me)
What I need, what I can do
And what I can’t do

And who are you, who judges me?
You don’t need to try anymore, it’s all over now
It’s too late now to learn
You’ve lost me for too long, way too long, oh-oh

I’m not yours anymore
I’m not the one
Who has to suffer for being loved
I’ll be mine forever
Whether I’m bad or good
But for sure, ah-ah
I’ll trust myself, ah-ah

And who are you, who judges me?
You don’t need to try anymore, it’s all over now
It’s too late now to learn
You’ve lost me for too long, oh-oh

(I can’t be your lover)
(What we had is over)
(There must be another one for me)
(I need someone, baby)
(Treat me like a lady)
(Make me feel so heavenly)

I can’t be your lover
What we had is over
There must be another one for me, aha
I need someone, baby
Treat me like a lady
Make me feel so heavenly
Feel so heavenly, ah-ah
Feel so heavenly

lyrics

Once again just hold me
Let me feel you breathe
Softly kiss me on my face
Love is all I need

Lonely moments, years
Nothing before you
Finally you’re here
Our love is true

Hold me once again, my dear
Let your passion take me
In my heart, there’s harmony
When you’re close to me

Even in my dreams
I really need to feel you
Forever we’ll be one
Our love is true

You are the only one
Our love is timeless
When you are by my side
I’m truly blessed with
With only happiness

I have got someone
Someone of my own
A part of me
Who lives for me
Who would die for me

Hold me once again, my dear
Let your passion take me
In my heart, there’s harmony
When you’re close to me

Even in my dreams
I really need to feel you
Forever we’ll be one
Our love is true

You are the only one
Our love is timeless
When you are by my side
I’m truly blessed with
With only happiness

I have got someone
Someone of my own
A part of me
Who lives for me
Who would die for me

You are the only one
(Our love is timeless)
(When you are) by my side
I’m truly blessed with
With only happiness

I have got someone of my own
A part of me
Who lives for me
Who would die for me

A part of me
Who lives for me
Who would die for me

lyrics

Silence ties the dark like an anchor
In me slowly the fear melts away
This love was a vision
This is not my time

Only a few hours left til dawn
And outside unrest, as if a war is on
I put on a coat and leave
To forget everything

And again boats sail down Danube
Don’t you worry about me any more
I’m like leaves, wind blows me around
Wolves die alone

And again boats sail down Danube
Don’t you worry about me any more
I’m like leaves, wind blows me around
Wolves die alone

Silence ties the dark like an anchor
In me slowly the fear melts away
I put on a coat and leave
To forget everything

And again boats sail down Danube
Don’t you worry about me any more
I’m like leaves, wind blows me around
Wolves die alone

(Down Danube, down Danube, down Danube)

And again boats sail down Danube
Don’t you worry about me any more
I’m like leaves, wind blows me around
Wolves die alone

I’m like leaves, wind blows me around
Wolves die alone

2006

Croatia’s entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2006 was chosen on 4 March using the Dora competition in the seaside resort of Opatija, the place where the first Dora was held. Severina Vučković was chosen with the song “Moja štikla” (My stiletto), which was described as a turbo-folk song with humorous lyrics and Balkan folk motifs. The lyrics were written by Severina, the music by Boris Novković (Croatian representative in 2005) and Franjo Valentić, and arrangement by popular Bosnian-born musician Goran Bregović. Due to Serbia & Montenegro’s withdrawal from the contest this year, Croatia automatically qualified for the final based on the previous year’s performance, eventually coming 13th with 56 points.
Severina was born 21 April 1972 in Split, Croatia, then Yugoslavia. She won many festival awards and her albums achieved high sales. She achieved international fame when her home porn video was published on the Internet in 2004. Severina previously attempted to reach Eurovision in 2000.
lyrics

For the grass has not yet sprouted
Where my high heel has stepped

(Come here, come here, come here)
Hop, hop, hop, hop
(Go, my chick)

Tick-tock, around half past two
You’ll pinch me, so that nobody can see it
I know them well, guys like you
The devils are your godfathers

Ring, ring, you’ll search for my number
Knock, knock, go knocking somewhere else
(Darling, girl, come and tighten your socks)

For the grass has not yet sprouted
Where my high heel has stepped

Oyda da, oyda dai, oyda dai dai…
Oyda da, oyda dai, oyda dai dai…
Oyda da, oyda dai, oyda dai dai…
Oyda da, oyda dai… my, my high heel

(Six) seven, (six) eight, (six) nine
(Six) Mine
(Once again, girl)

S… s… s… sex
(Hop, hop, shake, shake)

Tick-tock, around half past two
You’ll nibble me, so that nobody can see it
A golden ring, a thin moustache
Oh boy, I know them well, guys like you

Ring, ring, you’ll search for my number
Shoo, shoo, go off to someone else
(Darling, girl, come and tighten your socks)

For the grass has not yet sprouted
Where my high heel has stepped

Oyda da, oyda dai, oyda dai dai…
Oyda da, oyda dai, oyda dai dai…
Oyda da, oyda dai, oyda dai dai…
Oyda da, oyda dai… my, my high heel

(Zoomba, zoomba, zoomba, zoomba)
(Hay, straw, cheese, salami)
(Risi bisi, a bigger pot)
(Red beet, red beet)
Africa, paprika

(Go, mine)
Six, six, six, seven, six, eight, six, nine
Six, six, six, six, mine, mine
Go, go

For the grass has not yet sprouted
Where my high heel has stepped

Oyda da, oyda dai, oyda day dai…
Oyda da, oyda dai, oyda day dai…
Oyda da, oyda dai, oyda day dai…
Oyda da, oyda dai… my, my high heel

2007

Croatia selected their entry to Eurovision through the traditional Croatian Dora 2007, which consisted of two semi-finals and a final. The two semifinals took place on 1 March and 2 March 2007 and the final on 3 March 2007. Dragonfly feat. Dado Topić represented Croatia with the song “Vjerujem u ljubav”. In the semi-final on 10 May, they performed 13th, and finished 16th (out of 28), this meant they did not qualify for the final.
lyrics

No, it’s not the pain of needing you
I live, and I know I don’t have you
You’ll never know how much I love you
You’ll never know how much I need you

If you look into my eyes
That’s where I’ve been hiding pain for a long time now
And that line from my song:
You are like salt on my wound

For I believe in love
Something you didn’t want
And this heart can only dream of
And I won’t let it wake up

For I believe in love
Something you didn’t want
And this heart can only dream of
And I won’t let it wake up

You’ll never know how much I love you
You’ll never know how much I need you

If you look into my heart
That’s where you live eternally
For me, the world without you
Might as well not exist

For I believe in love
Just as you do
And all this heart can do is dream
And I won’t let it wake up

For I believe in love
Just as you do (As you do)
And all this heart can do is dream
And I won’t let it wake up

No, it’s not the pain of needing you
I live, and I know I don’t have you
You’ll never know how much I love you
You’ll never know how much I need you

No, it’s not the pain

Croatia participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 and placed twenty-first in the final. Having missed their first Eurovision final, Croatia hoped for a better result in Belgrade. Ten songs pre-qualified for the final of the Dora that was held in Opatija on 23 February 2008. They were joined by six qualifiers from a semi-final on 22 February 2008. A jury/televoting mix chose the entry. Kraljevi Ulice & 75 Cents were declared the winners, even though they had the same number of points as Antonija Šola, because they were the jury’s favorites. Among the performers in competition were Emilija Kokić the lead singer of the Eurovision Song Contest 1989 winners Riva and 1996 Croatian entrant Maja Blagdan.
Croatia took part in the second semi-final on 22 May 2008, qualifying for the final.[1] In the final they performed 9th following Poland and preceding Finland. They gained 44 points and were ranked 21st.
lyrics

You see my friend, I remember all
And I can tell you that between this
And a million other songs, there is no difference

For this life erases traces behind us
In the good night strange devils are released
So every dream is agleamed by the cold sun
And the memories are almost all extinguished

If you ask me, just one more thing I would know
That all colours only exist with this rhyme
While the night and day are the trace of some verse
And they will disappear when all our songs vanish

Play that romance tonight
Quietly, tenderly, so it makes me ill
Sorrow when the nightingale is dying
When the soul seperates from the body

Play that romance tonight
But slowly so that everyone hears it
Let the guitars play again
I haven’t heard them for so long

I’ve been told today that I’m out of league
Technological waste like a monkey on a branch
And I was the first Internet in the world
On the ships I crosslinked the planet with music

Even now I remember all the dreams of my songs
All the fantasies and the faces that are gone
Like shadows they are a part of my awakenings
Captured in me, interwoven a long time ago

Play that romance tonight
Quietly, tenderly, so it makes me ill
Sorrow when the nightingale is dying
When the soul seperates from the body

Play that romance tonight
But slowly so that everyone hears it
Let the guitars play again
I haven’t heard them for so long

I’ve been told today that I’m out of league
Technological waste like a monkey on a branch
And I was the first Internet in the world
On the ships I crosslinked the planet with music

I crosslinked, I crosslinked
I, I, I was the first Internet in the world
I crosslinked the planet

lyrics

I was a cloud, floating
And I haven’t seen the sun
I was waiting for you

God has sent you to me
Detached you from his heart, so I could live
And waited for you to give me the miracle of love

Hey darling, hey darling
You’re turning tears into cotton
You’re a sight for sore eyes
You enchant

Hey beauty, hey holy
You’re turning water into wine
You’re praying for all of us, for all of us

Tena… Tena…

I was a cloud, floating
And I haven’t seen the sun

Hey darling, hey darling
You’re turning tears into cotton
You’re a sight for sore eyes
You enchant

Hey beauty, hey holy
You’re turning water into wine
You’re praying for all of us, for all of us

Tena… Tena…
Tena, Tena, Tena…

lyrics

Easy, everything is easy, whenever I have you
Believe me, wherever I am, I know that I’m yours
You can see it by the glow in my eyes

Easy, everything is easy, because you’re not leaving me
When I’m not smiling at you, I know I’m making a mistake
Because I’m just a woman who surrenders

With last shred of strength now, I’m standing here before you
My soul is being torn up by storms of unrest
It’s harder to come to terms with this pain
Because you were cheated and it’s killing me

Easy, everything is easy, because you know me best
While I’m standing here before you, you can see I’m scared
Because betrayal is written on my face

While I’m standing here before you, you can see I’m scared
Please forgive me, I love you, really love you
I can’t live without you, I’m no longer myself
I’m no longer myself

Believe me, wherever I am, I know that I’m yours
You can see it by the glow in my eyes
Easy, everything is easy

2011

Croatia participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 in Düsseldorf, Germany, selecting their entry through the national selection Dora 2011 – Let’s go to Eurovision!, organised by Croatian broadcaster Hrvatska radiotelevizija (HRT).The nineteenth edition of Dora in 2011 is set to move from its traditional home in Opatija, a small town on the Adriatic Coast, to the capital Zagreb, because a Dora in Zagreb would be a lot less expensive to hold.Having observed this year’s winner from Germany, HRT has decided to choose a representative in the same way that the Germans chose Lena Meyer-Landrut.

lyrics

Friday, my night
Flashing street lights
Let’s get this old town dancing
Leave your troubles behind, oh…

Put your hands up
Let the magic take over your heart
Join us, you’ll have a good time
Love is here to stay

Celebrate every single step you take
Stop the world for a moment
Shine like a comet
Nothing can stop you now

Celebrate every single step you take
Stop the world for a moment
Shine like a comet
In our musical galaxy

Friday, late night
We’re all just shadows in the moonlight
A thousand drums are beating
Till the break of day

Put your hands up
Let the magic take over your heart
Join us, you’ll have a good time
The party of your life

Celebrate every single step you take
Stop the world for a moment
Shine like a comet
Nothing can stop you now

Celebrate every single step you take
Stop the world for a moment
Shine like a comet
In our musical galaxy

Just keep moving and dancing and dancing and dancing
Music will heal your soul
Let’s move to the rhythms and beats all around
Until we lose control

Celebrate every single step you take
Stop the world for a moment
Shine like a comet
Nothing can stop you now

Celebrate every single step you take
Stop the world for a moment
Shine like a comet
In our musical galaxy

lyrics

Listen to me when I tell you I’ve tried everything
You’re still in my thoughts, I still feel you as mine
But I hear you’re in love and people tell me you don’t care
Me, like I’ve lost my mind, I still hope for you

But heaven pays everything back and remembers all debts
Each one of us dreams and heaven determines our path
Heaven pays everything back, someone up there sees it all
And these tears of mine will become your burden

But I hear you’re in love and people tell me you don’t care
Me, like I’ve lost my mind, I still hope for you

But heaven pays everything back and remembers all debts
Each one of us dreams and heaven determines our path
Heaven pays everything back, someone up there sees it all
And these tears of mine will become your burden

(All) hey, (all) all…
Heaven pays everything back (all, all)
Someone up there sees it all
Whoa… someone up there sees it all
All… all…

(Heaven pays everything back) Heaven pays everything back
(Someone up there sees it all)
(These tears of mine will become your burden)
Someone up there sees it all
