History
FYR Macedonia, officially debuted at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1998. However, the country had already made efforts to enter the contest two years before since the Eurovision Song Contest 1996’s pre-selection round where it submitted its first song entry, “Samo ti” (Само ти) sung by Kaliopi, which failed to qualify to the final thus eliminating the nation from competing for the first time.
The country’s best result was in 2006, when Elena Risteska sang “Ninanajna” (Нинанајна) in Athens, Greece and came 12th. This would be equaled in 2012, when Kaliopi sang “Crno i belo (Црно и бело). Despite never finishing in the top 10, their record of qualifying for every final was only broken in 2008, when the jury vote used in the semi-final chose Sweden as a finalist, despite Tamara, Vrčak and Adrian having come 10th in the televote and not saved by the jury.

1996

Kaliopi made a comeback in 1996 at SkopjeFest, the country’s selection contest for the Eurovision Song Contest 1996, with the song “Samo Ti” (“Only You”). She was awarded first place by the jury and audience. She was thus set to be the first singer to represent Macedonia at Eurovision since its independence from Yugoslavia, however, her entry did not receive enough points in the pre-qualifying round to reach the final.
lyrics

My star, you, who always follows me
Why do you disappear right now
My light, which fills my eyes
Knows of pain and sin
And knows of my tears

Only you can do everything
Only you, please, come to me
Only you know everything
For… for all my life, look after me, look after me

Oh, my hope, I know that you can hear me
And I know that you will never leave me

Only… only you, can… can do everything
Only you, please, come to me
Only… only you know everything
Only… only… only you, you look after me, look after me
Me… me… me… me…

Only… only you can do everything
Only you, please, come to me
Only…
(Only… only… only you)
(Only… only… only you)
Only… only… only you, look after me, look after me

lyrics

Stop, dawn, do not rise, you fiend
Let the night hide
These eyes which bear pearls
This heart which cannot love another
The wine leads me to her
And further away from my senses

I have to drink
To get drunk
To live alone, without her
Mother, I cannot

Mother, go and ask her elders
Will they give her to me
If they do, call the musicians
If they don’t, instead of curses
Cry for me

I have to drink
To get drunk
To live alone, without her
Mother, I cannot

I have to drink
To get drunk
To live alone, without her
Mother, I cannot

Dawn, do not rise
A drunken dance
Dance with me

2000

lyrics

100% I love you, 100% I do
And I have no intention of losing my hope
100% I love you, 100% I do
And I’ll tell you again: yes, I am persistent

100% I love you, 100% I do
And I have no intention of losing my hope
100% I love you, 100% I do
And I’ll tell you again: yes, I am persistent

He’s as sweet as chocolate, he’s sweet, so sweet, I swear
And when he looks at you, is it coincidentally?
Tonight I will get him, I will whisper to his ear
To remind him

No, do not forget, on the wall by your bed
To cut my photo from a magazine, and frame it
And don’t forget to dream of me tonight

100% I love you, 100% I do
And I have no intention of losing my hope
100% I love you, 100% I do
And I’ll tell you again: yes, I am persistent

100% I love you, 100% I do
And I have no intention of losing my hope
100% I love you, 100% I do
And I’ll tell you again: yes, I am persistent

Oo la la la la la la la…
Oo la la la…
Oo la la la…

No, do not forget, on the wall by your bed
To cut my photo from a magazine, and frame it
And don’t forget to dream of me tonight

100% I love you, 100% I do
And I have no intention of losing my hope
100% I love you, 100% I do
And I’ll tell you again: yes, I am persistent

I love you 100%, yes I do
And I often wonder if you would love me to
I love you 100%, yes I do
And I’ll make you see that this heart of mine is true
And I’ll make you see that this heart of mine is true
I love you 100%, yes I do

lyrics

The wind carries memories of a time
That seems so far away
But now it’s changed, now it has lost its shine

The falling snow reminds me of an old love
That gives me the will to go on
But the wheel of fortune will roll again

Try to imagine, even for a moment
A place, a piece of land in the south
It could be paradise for you, but, you know, it’s up to us

Now we are all gathered at one same place in this time
That seems so unsecure
But the wheel of fortune will roll again, won’t it?

Try to imagine, even for a moment
A place, a piece of land in the south
It could be paradise for you, but, you know, it’s up to us

Try to imagine, even for a moment
A place, a piece of land in the south
(It could be paradise for you), but, you know, it’s up to us

Try to imagine, even for a moment
A place, a piece of land in the south
It could be paradise for you, but, you know, it’s up to us

lyrics

I saw my ID and it wasn’t me
It was someone else’s identity
Why do I need to prove myself?
And who is the judge of my sanity?

Roaming through my old emotions
I find new feelings of misery
I bet with my soul to get back the truth
Where I will face reality

Life is a book and you gotta read it
Life is a story and you gotta tell it
Life is a song and you gotta sing it
You’ve got to know how to live it

Life is a book and you gotta read it
Life is a story and you gotta tell it
Life is a song and you gotta sing it
You’ve got to know how to live it

Walking around, some thoughts on my mind
I search for a place where I’ll be free
From all that is said and all that’s been done
It’ll be hard to find it inside of me

Life is a book and you gotta read it
Life is a story and you gotta tell it
Life is a song and you gotta sing it
You’ve got to know how to live it

(Life is a book and you gotta read it)
Life is a story and you gotta tell it
Life is a song and you gotta sing it
You’ve got to know how to live it

I know that I’ve gotta try
No one can see me cry
I can’t take it anymore
I must find a way to let myself go

Ooh yeah
Ooh… yeah
(Life is a, life is, life is, life is a, life is, life)
Life is true, you know it, don’t you?

Life is a book and you gotta read it
Life is a story and you gotta tell it
Life is a song and you gotta sing it
You’ve got to know how to live it

(Life is a book and you gotta read it)
Life is a story and you gotta tell it
Life is a song and you gotta sing it
You’ve got to know how to live it…

(Life is a book and you gotta read it)
Life is a story and you gotta tell it
Life is a song and you gotta sing it
You’ve got to know how to live it

lyrics

Ley la la ley la
La la ley la la ley la
La la ley la la ley la
La la ley la la la

Ley la la ley la
La la ley la la ley la
La la ley la la ley la
La la ley la la la

Day after day, time after time
You just try to make me cry
Hand in your hand, tears in my eyes
I pretend you make me fly

But honestly, it’s plain to see
I’m not the man to be
Your cuddly toy, I am the boy
Who will break up with you to be free

Make my day, get away
Take it all, baby, please go
Try to play another way
Or I will find another love

Ley la la ley la
La la ley la la ley la
La la ley la la ley la
La la ley la la la

Ley la la ley la
La la ley la la ley la
La la ley la la ley la
La la ley la la la

Day after day, time after time
You just try to make me cry
But don’t you see that I am the boy
Who will break up with you to be free

Make my day, get away
Take it all, baby, please go
Try to play another way
Or I will find another love

(Make my day)
(Give it now, baby)

Make my day, get away
Take it all, baby, please go
Try to play another way
Or I will find another love

Make my day, get away
Take it all, baby, please go
Try to play another way
Or I will find another love

Make my day
Hey, hey, hey!

But if you wanna ninanaj with me, I’ll tell you what to do

Dance with me, nanani nananaina
Sing with me, nanani nananaina
I wanna be with you
l wanna give it to you

Dance with me, nanani nananaina
Sing with me, nanani nananaina
I wanna be with you
l wanna give my love to you
Ayaya yaya yayay… ayaya yaya yay…

I can make your wishes and your wildest dreams come true
l can make Beyoncé and Shakira dance for you
I’m dangerously in love with you, I’m dyin’ for your kiss
But if you wanna ninanaj with me, I’m gonna give it to you

Dance with me, nanani nananaina
Sing with me, nanani nananaina
I wanna be with you
l wanna give it to you

Dance with me, nanani nananaina
Sing with me, nanani nananaina
I wanna be with you
l wanna give my love to you

You found a way to touch my heart and soul
You’ve opened up my mind, I’ll never let you go
(Never let you go)
You are like another part of me
Without you, I can’t live, my life is incomplete
Oh…

Sing, nanani nananaina
Sing to me, nanani nananaina

Sing, nanani nananaina
Sing to me, nanani nananaina
Dance with me and I will be with you

lyrics

Naina naina nanana naina…
Naina naina nanana naina…
Naina naina nanana naina…
Naina naina nanana na…

Tonight again I am talking to shadows
I have to run away from myself
Three angels look after me
I am walking on the right road

My world is called music
It has no religions or borders
My world is eight notes
One Balkan soul

My world is called music
It has no religions or borders
My world is eight notes
One Balkan soul

The sun wakes me up in my bed
A song caresses my soul
Three memories that were hurtful
I erased forever

My world is called music
It has no religions or borders
My world is eight notes
One Balkan soul

Music is the only world for me
In my world we live in harmony
Music knows no creed or colour
Day by day, we’ll live our dream

Naina naina nanana naina…
Naina naina nanana naina…
Naina naina nanana naina…
Nanana naina… hey…

Music is the only world for me
In my world we live in harmony
Music knows no creed or colour
Day by day, we’ll live our dream

Music knows no creed or colour
Day by day, we’ll live our dream

lyrics

Let’s go

Let’s go, let’s go, let’s go
What ya gonna do if I let you know
You’re the only one I’ve been dreaming for
I’ve never felt love like this before

Let’s go, let’s go, let’s go
Where the moon is full and the lights are low
We can do it so slow, kiss in slo-mo
Until dawn breaks, then I ride out solo

You always knew how to make me cry
I feel so helpless without you
I’m starting to lose my mind
I wanna be with you tonight

The stars above glow like they’re making love
I’m running under the moonlight
Alone in the sleepless night
Just to be right by your side

Let me love you, just let me love you
Unfold your angel wings
Fly out from my wildest dreams
Let me love you, just let me love you
Kiss me and let me die
Before you tell me goodbye

Let’s go, let’s go, let’s go
What ya gonna do if I let you know
You’re the only one I’ve been dreaming for
I’ve never felt love like this before

Let’s go, let’s go, let’s go
Where the moon is full and the lights are low
We can do it so slow, kiss in slo-mo
Until dawn breaks, then I ride out solo

You always knew how to make me cry
Who needs a smile when my tears
Are so full of love inside
And they are stronger than my pride

Let me love you, just let me love you
Unfold your angel wings
Fly out for my wildest dreams
Let me love you, just let me love you
Kiss me and let me die
Before you tell me goodbye

Let me love you, just let me love you
Kiss me and let me die
Before you tell me goodbye

lyrics

Yeah yeah… but you are God-given
The dearest thing that will remain

If it weren’t for you, I’d have no one to write a love song to
If it weren’t for you, I’d have nothing to brag about to people
If it weren’t for you, not a smile would cover my lips
If your voice doesn’t wake me up, my whole day is sad

Yeah yeah… these eyes would watch you day and night
Yeah yeah… I keep the smile on these lips only for you
Yeah yeah… in happiness and sorrow, what ever happens will pass away
Yeah yeah… but you are God-given, the dearest thing that will remain

There are beautiful things in life, when one knows how to live
There are hidden places in this world, but you have to find them

Yeah yeah… these eyes would watch you day and night
Yeah yeah… I keep the smile on these lips only for you
Yeah yeah… in happiness and sorrow, what ever happens will pass away
Yeah yeah… but you are God-given, the dearest thing that will remain

I give you love to get something
Something that will remain, yeah…

Yeah yeah… in happiness and sorrow, what ever happens will pass away
Yeah yeah… but you are God-given, the dearest thing that will remain
Yeah yeah… in happiness and sorrow, what ever happens will pass away
Yeah yeah… but you are God-given, the dearest thing that will remain

lyrics

A new day is waking
But the rain will come to us again
This gravestone by me is you

Don’t touch these lips of mine, that isn’t you
Leave me to dream, though a dream with you is just a dream

I have the strength to get over you
To not have you, and to not see you
And I spread my wings to fly over you
Through all, through all the heavens

Look, I’m going, to feel the warm wind on my face again
It’s good to be free and alone
Free and alone

I have the strength to get over you
To not have you, and to not see you
And I spread my wings to fly over you
Through all, through all the heavens

A day is waking, a new day, a new problem
You’re here with me, but again I’m lonely
I’m running from everything, even running from you
Little woman I just need to be by myself
I want to dream, I wanted to dream
But a dream with you is only a dream
And I have the strength to realise that you were never mine, ha

I have the strength to get over you
To not have you, and to not see you
And I spread my wings to fly over you
Through all, through all the heavens

I have the strength to get over you
To not have you, and to not see you
And I spread my wings to fly over you
Through all, through all the heavens

lyrics

Pure and white, her skin is so inviting
Like a new, unbeaten snow
Eyes of blue, so beautiful and blinding
Like the sky over Moscow

I’m a Macedonian, she’s a Russian girl
I’m welcomed like the music
Music, music
Which I don’t understand

Neither “kakalin” nor “kamaja”
I just don’t understand any of it
Neither “kakalin” nor “kamaja”
I’ll learn it all for her

Neither “kakalin” nor “kamaja”
I just don’t understand any of it
Neither “kakalin” nor “kamaja”
I’ll learn it all for her

I’m a Macedonian, she’s a Russian girl
Give her a vodka, and me a rakia
Music, music
Which I don’t understand

Neither “kakalin” nor “kamaja”
I just don’t understand any of it
Neither “kakalin” nor “kamaja”
I’ll learn it all for her

Lai lai lai la la lai lai lai la la
Lai lai lai la la lai lai lai la la
Lai lai lai la la lai lai lai la la
Lai lai la la lai

Neither “kakalin” nor “kamaja”
I just don’t understand any of it
Neither “kakalin” nor “kamaja”
I’ll learn it all for her

Neither “kakalin” nor “kamaja”
I just don’t understand any of it
Neither “kakalin” nor “kamaja”
I’ll learn it all for her

I’ll learn it all for her

lyrics

Look into my eyes now
I’m not a loser, you know
I don’t give in until the end
There is no birth without falling

Open your soul and admit to me
What we are now, you and me
Half of me is in you
And half of you is sleeping in me

Come on and hug me, raise me to the heavens

Everything is black and white
One truth and one lie
And when we are together
I choose happiness, you choose sorrow

Everything is black and white
Nothing separates good and bad
Come on and smile
The day is leading me to the white nights

Look into my eyes now
You will find everything there
Come on, give yourself to the end
For a new rebirth with me

Open your soul and admit to me
What we are now, you and me
Half of me is in you
And half of you is sleeping in me

Come on and hug me, raise me to the heavens

Everything is black and white
One truth and one lie
And when we are together
I choose happiness, you choose sorrow

Everything is black and white
Nothing separates good and bad
Come on and smile
The day is leading you to the white nights

Everything is black and white
One truth and one lie
And when we are together
I choose happiness, you choose sorrow

Everything is black and white
Nothing separates good and bad
Come on and smile
The day is leading me to the white nights

Everything is black and white
