History

Romania has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 14 times, debuting in the 1994 contest, with their best position being 3rd, achieving this at the 2005 and 2010 contests.
Since the introduction of the semi-finals, Romania is along with Greece, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Russia and Ukraine, one of the five countries left that has never missed a final. Azerbaijan has as well never missed a final, but because they debuted after the semi-final introduction, they are not counted as one of these countries.

1993

Romania originally had chosen Dida Drăgan for the Eurovision Song Contest 1993, but after she failed to qualify from the qualifying round (Kvalifikacija za Millstreet), Romania had to wait a year, before they could debut in the contest.

lyrics

Don’t go away

My sky, bitter and lonely
Troubled by the wind
You still burn like a light
Only in my thought

The pillow is written in tears
The sky is written in rain
The days turn their petal
Towards the past

Where are you? Where are you?
Where are you? Where are you?

My step touches your shadow
My eyes are longing for you
Your palm is the tender stake
In which I want to burn

And I want nothing but the burn
Which did hurt
And you are the only one I am thirsty for
Because I have lost you

Where are you? Where are you?
Where are you? Where are you?

God, how my life went down
Let me get out of it
God, how my life went down, my life

God, how my life went down
Let me get out of it

God, how my life went down
Let me get out of it

1994

In 1994 Romania debuted in Ireland by sending Dan Bittman as the country’s first contestant with the song “Dincolo de nori”, by failing to receive a high place in the final, Romania were not allowed to participate in 1995, and had to wait until 1996.

lyrics
Beyond the clouds
The day I’ll come, maybe you’ll listen to me
I’ve chosen the good and the evil
I leave a part of me so that you take care of it

Nights without dreams, questions without answer
I wake up my hidden soul from the forgettiness

Beyond the clouds there’s a ray of light
Beyond the clouds, there’s my world, the world

I don’t beg pardon for all I have done
I ask for a ray of love to begin again

I’ve got the power now to change the world
I’ve got the power to dream

(Beyond the clouds, beyond the clouds)
Beyond the clouds
(Beyond the clouds)
There’s my world, there’s my world, the world
World, world, world, my world
(Beyond the clouds)
There’s my world
(Beyond the clouds)

(Beyond the clouds)
There’s my world

1996

In 1996 Romania selected Monica Anghel and Sincron for the contest in Oslo, Norway, but Romania failed to qualify from the pre-qualifying round, so the country was eliminated and because of the low results in the previous years, Romania did not enter for the 1997 contest.

lyrics
Prayer for world peace

How many times had fate defeated us
Abandoned by our dreams, our star fades
Way too many mothers don’t see their sons again today
Where are my parents, the child will ask

Where are you, God? Where did you go?
Why did you forget about these poor people?
Give us again the faith in a blue sky
May we all have peace in the years to come

(Give us again the faith in a blue sky)
(May we all have peace in the years to come)

The presidents of the world states keep on fighting
Because we are born too much on the Eastern
side of the map
We gave tears, and we also gave blood

Where are you, God? Where did you go?
Why did you forget about these poor people?
Give us again the faith in a blue sky
May we all have peace in the years to come

Where are you, God? Where did you go?
Why did you forget about these poor people?
Give us again the faith in a blue sky
May we all have peace in the years to come

Give us again, God, only blue skies
May we all have only peace in the years to come

(In the years to come)

1998

In 1998 Romania made a comeback to the contest after missing 4 years of the contest, the country was represented by Mălina Olinescu with the song “Eu cred”, but the low place back then resulted that Romania could not come back to the contest before in 2000.

lyrics
I believe
I, I do still await you
Although it’s not right to
Having just memories you’ve been
Because I feel you are so real
Thought and soul
Encouraging
Protecting me so

I believe you’re listening
I believe you’re not forgetting
To give me from the sky
Just a sign you will remain
If I could touch your world
I’ll call you back
I believe in us

Yes, maybe I am wrong
I don’t know how to raise my song
Towards the stars, to find you there
Because you’re only in my dreams
Like saying in your sweet promise
That’s why we’re still good friends
For good

I believe you’re listening
I believe you’re not forgetting
To give me from the sky
Just a sign you will remain
If I could touch your world
I’ll call you back
I believe in us

Sometimes I feel the way
You watch me
And only silence you could give me

I believe you’re listening
I believe you’re not forgetting
To give me from the sky
Just a sign you will remain
If I could touch your world
I’ll call you back
I’ll call you back
I believe in us
Oo…

2000

In 2000 Romania again returned to the contest held in Stockholm, Sweden, when the band Taxi got the chance for representing the country, with the first song to be on English, also Taxi did not succeed to get a high place, so yet again Romania would had to miss the 2001 contest held in Denmark. Even though, they managed to bring the first twelve points for Romania, given by Fyrom.

lyrics
The moon
I knew it all from the start
I knew you’ll rise above my world, a little sun, warming my heart
I betrayed myself, I knew I lied
You’ve searched into my soul to find love
And found me hiding deep inside
You did see a way to set me free

Now I hear when the wind is playing with the stars of my night
Simply ’cause I have you near
Now I feel when the moon is playing on and on and on with my heart
Simply ’cause your love is real
Oh…

I knew it all, I understood
I simply blinked and let the light give me reasons to be good
You did see a way to set me free

Now I hear when the wind is playing with the stars of my night
Simply ’cause I have you near
Now I feel when the moon is playing on and on and on with my heart
Simply ’cause your love is real
Oh…

Yes, I feel when the moon is playing
Oh…

Now I hear how the wind is playing with the stars of my night
Simply ’cause I have you near
Now I feel when the moon is playing on and on and on with my heart
Simply ’cause your love is real
Oh…
Oh…

2002

“Tell Me Why” was the Romanian entry in the Eurovision Song Contest 2002, performed in English by Monica Anghel and Marcel Pavel. This was the first Romanian entry not to be recorded in Romanian. The song is a ballad, with the singers mourning the end of their relationship.
With her appearance at the Contest, Anghel achieved an unusual distinction. She had previously attempted to represent Romania at the 1996 Contest with “Rugă pentru pacea lumii”, but had been unable to enter the main Contest due to the rules in place at the time. She thus became the only artist (as of 2011) to have failed to appear at the main Contest in 1996 to make an appearance later.
At the close of voting, it had received 71 points, placing 9th in a field of 24.

lyrics
Tell me why
We are behaving like two strangers in the gloomy night
We have lost so many feelings in this endless fight
If you want to go away, now I must obey
But for my part, you’ll remain always in my heart

Tell me why we have to say goodbye
Was our love only a foolish lie?
Tell me why your eyes are cold and dry
No more tears, no more fears
Nothing more to share together

Tell me why we have to say goodbye
Why we broke our wings in flight
Tell my why, couldn’t we just try
To forgive and believe we can reach the sky?

Tell me why we have to say goodbye
Was our love only a foolish lie?
Tell me why your eyes are cold and dry
No more tears, no more fears
Nothing more to share together
Tell me why

In the international final she came in 10th.

lyrics
Don’t break my heart
Have you ever known
What the friends are for?
Have you ever listened to your heart?
And lie no more

If you wanna count on me
I’ll never let you down
But don’t break my heart
‘Cause I don’t wanna cry

Have you ever known
What the friends are for?
Have you ever listened to your heart?
And lie no more

If you wanna count on me
I’ll never let you down
But don’t break my heart
Cos I don’t wanna cry

Even if you fail
Just try again
Listen to your heart
You’ll find your way
You gotta learn to live
Don’t you understand, oh baby?

Have you ever known
What the friends are for?
Have you ever listened to your heart?
And lie no more

If you wanna count on me
I’ll never let you down
But don’t break my heart
‘Cause I don’t wanna cry

Have you ever known
What the friends are for?
Have you ever listened to your heart?
And lie no more

If you wanna count on me
I’ll never let you down
But don’t break my heart
‘Cause I don’t wanna cry

You gotta learn to smile
You’re still so young
Let’s make a deal
Don’t waste your time
You gotta learn to fight
Do you understand, oh baby?
Do you understand, oh baby?

Please, don’t break my heart
‘Cause I don’t wanna cry

Have you ever listened to your heart?
And lie no more

If you wanna count on me
I’ll never let you down
But don’t break my heart
‘Cause I don’t wanna cry

Have you ever known
What the friends are for?
Have you ever listened to your heart?
And lie no more

If you wanna count on me
I’ll never let you down
But don’t break my heart
‘Cause I don’t wanna cry

Don’t break my heart

2004

In the 2004 Eurovision, Romania was represented by Sanda Ladoşi she sung “I Admit” and came 18th with 18 points.

lyrics
I admit
As in a dream, love appeared
Swept me away and made me lose control
Like never before

As in a dream, love touched me
I felt how it touched the bottom
Of my very soul

Now I know I find the key to my heart
I just hope this ain’t the dream
And that you are reality

I admit I fell for you so badly
And I admit you make my senses wild
I know sometimes I am looking foolish
I admit, I admit
I’ll be your fool as long as you are mine
Yes mine, just mine

It’s good to be in love
It makes you touch the sky
A thousand times or more

It’s good to admit
That my heart starts to race
When you walk through that door

Now I know you are the key to my heart
Just hope you’re not the dream
And that you’ll be my everything

I admit I fell for you so badly
And I admit you make my senses wild
I know sometimes I am looking foolish
I admit, I admit
I’ll be a fool as long as you are mine
Yes mine, just mine

I admit I fell for you so badly
And I feel so good
And I admit you make my senses wild
I know sometimes I might act and look foolish
I admit, I admit
I’ll be a fool as long as you are mine
Yes mine, just mine

Just mine
You make me shine
You are the light in my life

I admit I fell for you so badly
And I feel so good
And I admit you make my senses wild
I know sometimes I am looking foolish
I admit, I admit
I’ll be a fool as long as you are mine
Yes mine, just mine

I admit I fell for you so badly
And I feel so good
And I admit you make my senses wild
Mmm yeah
I know sometimes I might act and look foolish
I admit, I admit
I’ll be a fool as long as you are mine
Yes mine, just mine, alright
Mine, yes mine, just mine
Just mine

lyrics
Let me try
When I find you in my dreams
You always try to run away
It doesn’t look it, but it seems
You still take my breath away

And when I try to ask you why
We couldn’t give it one more try
I can find you anywhere
You’re not there

Let me try, let me try
I don’t wanna say goodbye
I will find a way to make you stay
Just let me try

Looking back, I realised
We are learning from mistakes
I can see it in your eyes
I can feel your heart with brakes

But when I try to ask you why
We couldn’t give it one more try
I can find you anywhere
You’re not there

Let me try, let me try
I don’t wanna say goodbye
I will find a way to make you stay
Just let me try

Let me try, let me try
I don’t wanna say goodbye
I will find a way to make you stay
Just let me try

Let me try, let me try
I don’t wanna say goodbye
I will find a way to make you stay
Just let me try

Let me try…
I will find a way to make you stay
Just let me try

2006

At the end of the voting he landed fourth with 172 points, getting 12 points from two countries: Moldova and Spain.

lyrics

I’ll come back

I’m keeping your smile on my mind every day
I’m feeling your touch on my face, even while you’re away
Like when was together in that dream that could’ve been so right, hey
Like when was together in that dream that could’ve been so right

I’ll come back, I’ll come back
I’ll give my life to you
You’ll come back, you’ll come back
You’ll be forever mine

I’ll come back, I’ll come back
I’ll give my life to you
You’ll come back, you’ll come back
You’ll be forever mine

I wonder what I should feel, so empty these days
I wonder what I should feel now, while you’re away
We’ll dance together in that dream that could’ve been so right, hey
We’ll dance together in that dream that could’ve been so right

I’ll come back, I’ll come back
I’ll give my life to you
You’ll come back, you’ll come back
You’ll be forever mine

I’m keeping your smile in my mind
I’m feeling your touch on my face
And I wonder what I didn’t know

And I wonder why, why I didn’t know
And I wonder why I didn’t know

I’ll come back, I’ll come back
I’ll give my life to you
You’ll come back, you’ll come back
You’ll be forever mine

I’ll come back, I’ll come back
I’ll give my life to you
You’ll come back, you’ll come back
You’ll be forever mine

lyrics

Love, love, I love you

Everywhere around the world, “I love you”, it means the same
Every day and every night, only you can touch my flame
So take my heart, take my soul, everything of me
Everywhere you go, my baby, even Italy

You don’t have to be special, “I love you” is always the same
You can say it any way you want, whether you’re alone or with family (Fellow)
And then borders don’t exist, love has no boundaries
In the city or in the countryside, it’s the same in Spain (Miss)

Throughout the whole world, “I love you” is the same
Every day and every night, only you give me love (Come on!)
Here’s my sun, I’m giving it to you, everything I am
If you go, I’ll even look for you in Russia (Todomondo)

Somewhere, someone loves you, don’t forget
Say yes, my darling, love, love me
Wherever you are, wherever you go
I’ll be waiting, my darling, today and always

Miss, everywhere in the world, “I love you” is the same thing
Every day, every night, you stay my only rose
Take my heart, take my soul, my life, my dear (Go)
Call me wherever you are, even in Romania

Somewhere somebody loves you, don’t forget
Say yes, my love, you know how love is
Wherever you are, for however long you stay, I will wait for you
The heart says that your home is here (Yo…)

Everywhere around the world, “I love you” is always the same
Every day and every night, love, love me
Take my heart, take my soul, my life, my dear
The heart says that your home is here (Oh…)

Everywhere around the world, “I love you” is always the same
Every day and every night, love, love me
Take my heart, take my soul, my life, my dear
The heart says that your home is here

Well done! Come on!
Todomondo
Everybody, long live love
Sing with me baby, jump, jump around! Hey

lyrics
On an edge of the world

Come to an edge of the world
Like sitting on an empty bench
The sky would reach under my soles
And we won’t even know if we’re dreaming

Today, more than ever
My mind is calling you

A whole night long and a day
With you near me, if I stay
I’d think the world is mine
And I’ll only give the world to you

Come (come) and give me your hand
I come from afar, from afar, to you (to you)
Oh, look (look) at the world I dreamt of (I dreamt of)
The present and the past with you

Today, more than ever
My mind is calling you

A whole night long and a day – I offer you my heart, you know
With you near me, if I stay – I’m in love more than ever
I’d think the world is mine – I want you so much
And I’ll only give the world to you

My whole life with you
The most beautiful dream I know – I’m in love more than ever
Our path will see – I want you so much
The light of a timeless love
The light of a timeless love
Timeless

Tell me that you’ll only be mine

lyrics
The Balkan girls

The Balkan girls, they like to party
Like nobody, like nobody

It’s time for me to unwind
I’m gonna start my weekend with gin, tonic and lime
My girls take me for a ride
Ready to party and looking so fine

I wonder if beyond this
There could be something better
‘Cause I feel so good tonight
Don’t wanna end this night

The Balkan girls, they like to party
Like nobody, like nobody
(For crowd delight, we’ll shine all night)
The Balkan girls, they like to party
Like nobody, like nobody
(For crowd delight, we’ll shine all night)

My hips are ready to glow
This record is so hot and I have so much to show
I’ll find a boy for a kiss
Who knows, maybe he’ll be my prince

I wonder if beyond this
There could be something better
‘Cause I feel so good tonight
Don’t wanna end this night

The Balkan girls, they like to party
Like nobody, like nobody
(For crowd delight, we’ll shine all night)
The Balkan girls, they like to party
Like nobody, like nobody
(For crowd delight, we’ll shine all night)

(You’ve gotta live your life…)
If you didn’t find out
What love is about
And if you’re lonely, baby
Just open your mind, you’re one of a kind
You’ve got to live your life…

The Balkan girls, they like to party
Like nobody, like nobody
(For crowd delight, we’ll shine all night)
The Balkan girls, they like to party
Like nobody, like nobody
(For crowd delight, we’ll shine all night)

The Balkan girls, they like to party
Like nobody, like nobody
(For crowd delight, we’ll shine all night)
The Balkan girls, they like to party
Like nobody, like nobody
(For crowd delight, we’ll shine all night)

2010

Romania participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2010 and selected their entry through a national final, organised by TVR (Romanian Television Society).Shortly after “Playing with Fire” won Selecţia Naţională 2010 there were reports that the song, performed by Paula Seling and Ovi, aka Ovi Cernăuţeanu, was registered in Norway as being co-written by a Norwegian composer, Simen Eriksrud, which would have broken TVR regulations as participants and songwriters must all be Romanian. This was followed by calls for the song to be disqualified and a new national final held to select another song. Eriksrud, also Ovi’s producer, confirmed that Ovi was the only songwriter, with Eriksrud and Ovi only sharing publishing rights as his producer.Marina Almasan, the Romanian Head of Delegation, confirmed on 11 March that Ovi was the only writer of the song, after consulting with TONO, the Norwegian copyright association, Ovi’s record label, and the Romanian Copyright Office.
At the end of the voting Paula and Ovi had received 104 points, finishing 4th in the 19-song line-up and qualified for the final on 29 May.At the final on 29 May Romania performed 19th on stage, following France and preceding Russia. At the end of the voting Paula and Ovi had received 162 points, finishing 3rd out of the 25 competing countries, matching Romania’s best finish ever in the Eurovision Song Contest achieved in 2005.
After the EBU released the split results of the televoting and jury points from across Europe, it was revealed that Romania had finished third in the public televote in the second semi-final, behind Azerbaijan and Turkey. However Romania placed only 8th with the national juries, bringing their overall placing down. In the final however Romania only placed 6th in the public televote, but came 3rd with the national juries, bringing up their placing to 3rd overall.

lyrics
Playing with fire

Girl, girl, girl, can’t you see what you do to me tonight?
Boy, boy, boy, if you’re mean, I will start a fight tonight
You and I could try to stop – uh boy, till you drop
If we get together now, we’ll burn this place down

You and me, can’t you see, we’re playing with fire?
Tell me now, do you feel this burning desire?
Don’t stop, make it rock, is taking us higher
Could it be just a dream? Are you running away?

Uh ho… uh ho… uh ho…

Boy, boy, boy, what a fight, come and spend with me the night
Girl, girl, girl, are you sure? – Uhu – I ain’t here to fight, alright?
You and I could try to stop – uh boy, till you drop
If we get together now, we’ll burn this place down

You and me, can’t you see, we’re playing with fire
Tell me now, do you feel this burning desire?
Don’t stop, make it rock, it’s taking us higher
Could it be just a dream? Are you running away?

Uh ho… uh ho… uh ho…

You and me, can’t you see, we’re playing with fire?
Tell me now, do you feel this burning desire?
Don’t stop, make it rock, is taking us higher
Could it be just a dream? Are you running away?

You and me, can’t you see, we’re playing with fire?
Tell me now, do you feel this burning desire?
Don’t stop, make it rock, is taking us higher
Could it be just a dream? Are you running away?

Uh ho… uh ho… uh
If we get together now, we’ll burn this place down

lyrics
Change

You think you’ve got the time to figure it out
Life will pass you by, your time is running out, oh yeah
You’re haunted by your troubles every day
Wasting smiles away, what’s there left to say?

You gotta make believe and make your dreams come true
It ain’t that hard to do, whoa…

‘Cause I can’t change, I can’t change the world alone
I need you all, everybody, start dreaming of it
And take your step that’s gonna make a difference
And change your world
‘Cause I can’t change the world alone
I need you all, everybody, start dreaming of it
And take your step that’s gonna make a difference
And change your world

Strangest places that you just wanna hide
Won’t you turn the tide? A smile can change it all
You gotta make believe and make your dreams come true
It ain’t that hard to do, whoa…

‘Cause I can’t change, I can’t change the world alone
I need you all, everybody, start dreaming of it
And take your step that’s gonna make a difference
And change your world

You gotta make believe, make your dreams come true
It ain’t that hard to do, whoa…

I can’t change, I can’t change the world alone
I need you all, everybody, start dreaming of it
Take your step that’s gonna make a difference
And change your world

(I can’t change the world alone)
(I need you all) I need you all, everybody
Take your step and make a difference
And change the world

(‘Cause I can’t change the world alone)
(I need you all) I need you all, oh everybody
Take your step that’s gonna make a difference
And change your world

lyrics
Zaleilah

Like that, like that
Let’s go there, let’s go there

I feel the rhythm of your body touching me, eh yeah…
The perfume of the wind kissing me, eh yeah…
When I’m by your side, I feel great, whoa yeah…
If you touch me, embrace me, I want to dance
I’m happy, I can shout out loud

Zaleilah leilah lei, everyday, everybody
When you love you say, everyday, everybody
Zaleilah leilah lei, everyday, everybody
Zaleilah leilah lei, zaleilah leilah lei

Oh! How? How? How?

You, let yourself be loved, let me love you all my life
You never doubt that I’m here for you and only you
My cute boy, a little bit dark, come daddy, come here
Always with you, I feel like I’m living in a real love

Zaleilah leilah lei, everyday, everybody
When you love you say, everyday, everybody
Zaleilah leilah lei, everyday, everybody
Zaleilah leilah lei, zaleilah leilah lei

When you make me feel so special
I am dreaming, I’m dreaming
Oh, oh… hey yeah…

(Let’s go, let’s go, let’s go, let’s go there) Oh!
(Let’s go, let’s go) Like that (Let’s go) Move up
(Let’s go, let’s go, let’s go, let’s go there)
I’m coming, I’m coming (Let’s go, let’s go)

Zaleilah leilah lei, everyday, everybody
When you love you say, everyday, everybody
Zaleilah leilah lei, everyday, everybody
Zaleilah leilah lei, zaleilah leilah lei
