History
Slovakia has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest seven times, debuting in 1994. It had attempted to debut in 1993, but did not pass through the qualifying round. In the first three finals that Slovakia participated in, it placed no better than 18th, which it received in 1996. Because of its poor results, it was forced to miss a year after each contest and then the country opted not to return for a number of years. It did eventually return to the Contest ten years later, in 2009.

1993

Slovakia first attempted to enter the Eurovision Song Contest in 1993 in Millstreet, Ireland, but were unsuccessful in qualifying.Slovenská Televízia (STV), the Slovakian broadacter, selected Slovakian band Elán to represent them for the first time in Eurovision Song Contest history. The song that represented Slovakia in Kvalifikacija za Millstreet was “Amnestia na neveru” (“Amnesty to infidelity”).
The independently recognised countries of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Estonia, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia, took part at the Kvalifikacija za Millstreet which was held at the RTV SLO Broadcasting Centre in Ljubljana, Slovenia on 3 April 1993. Slovakia performed 7th in the running order, following Slovenia. Elán received 50 points for their song and performance, placing 4th, thereby failing to qualify.

lyrics
Amnesty to infidelity
Over the sea, over the fire, love takes us
It playfully deceives us with the body and in the soul
Just no confessions, it’s better to know nothing
Or in the best case, just to anticipate something

A fifthgrader knows, headmaster of the school knows
That love sometimes so splendidly hurts
It likes touches, dances and gestures
It rewards the unfaithful ones
And punishes the faithful ones

Love oh God, love, where do people find you
I announce a great amnesty to infidelity
Love oh God, love, where do people find you
Love oh God, love

Love has relapses, as long as we live
There’s never enough of it, it has a strange past
Love is a miracle, which happens quite often
Little boys get ill from it, and little girls so frail

Love is music, which is turning into a butterfly
But only when its wings get burned
It knows the truth about the flame

Love oh God, love, where do people find you
I announce a great amnesty to infidelity
Love oh God, love, where do people find you
Love oh God, love

Love oh God, love, where do people find you
I announce a great amnesty to infidelity
Love oh God, love, where do people find you
Love oh God, love

Love oh God, love, where do people find you
I announce a great amnesty to infidelity
Love oh God, love, where do people find you
Love oh God, love

1994

Slovakia debuted at the Eurovision Song Contest 1994 in Dublin, Ireland.Slovenská Televízia (STV), the Slovak public television, selected the Slovak rock band Tublatanka to represent them for the first time in the history of the Eurovision Song Contest. lyrics
Neverending song
I remember well the magic times
Such a long time ago
Come – let’s return back, to when we had our own world
And someone stole it from us
No I don’t believe that it’s been lost long ago

My love, do you remember that song
Our sign
That it’s telling you – come back, come back, come back
No need to be afraid of returns

I know that you let yourself be lead astray and the world lured you away
And you’re dreaming of happiness
The time can’t be put aback, but I am still yours
And it doesn’t end for me
You know that this is your land
And that shall never change

My love, do you remember that song
Our sign
That it’s telling you – come back, come back, come back
No need to be afraid of returns

My love, do you remember that song
Our sign
That it’s telling you – come back, come back, come back
No need to be afraid of returns

Listen to our song, my love far away
Flying to you through the night, you know what it means

lyrics
Till you have us
I know, I am not complete
I miss one face, and a little hope
I still believe in something, there are only few such things
And I know, the love exists

The love is strong, it examines us
If we know how to endure the event of passion
Then, love, please, help me, let me succeed and find you
If I still have you

Love protect us, till you have us
Protect each our tune
Love protect us, till you have us
Shine while dreams are wandering in the dark

Sometimes I am cruel
As everyone having dreams, experienced long ago
Only in forgetting, perhaps I shall purify me
And I shall burn the shade in my soul

The love is strong, it examines us
If we know how to endure the event of passion
Then, love, please, help me, let me succeed and find you
If I still have you

Love protect us, till you have us
Protect each our tune
Love protect us, till you have us
Shine while dreams are wandering in the …

Love protect us, till you have us
Protect each our tune
Love protect us, till you have us
Shine while dreams are wandering in the …

Love protect us, till you have us
Protect each our tune
Love protect us, till you have us
Shine while dreams are wandering in the …

Love protect us, till you have us
Protect each our tune
Love protect us, till you have us
Shine while dreams are wandering in the …

Love protect us, till you have us
Protect each our tune
Love protect us, till you have us

lyrics
A prayer
Love is fading out, I feel scared
How to survive without our dreams
I want to return, to stop the time
May sadness vanish with the darkness
You go away and hope to find
The world of splendour and fame
You give up and deny our love
So go there, hurry up
Without useless lies
And false words

Love, I am walking the valley of tears
Only you can get me out of misery
I long to touch your hands, your lips
Please, come back, do not give up
You are left alone
But I know, the day of your return
Is closed know it will come
Away with sadness
I want your love and passion
I want your tenderness
I want everything you have got

A prayer of love, forever
A prayer of passion and tenderness
A prayer of love, hoping in miracles
Inside of us
Inside of us

Love, I am walking the valley of tears
Only you can get me out of misery
I long to touch your hands, your lips
Please, come back, do not give up
You are left alone
But I know, the day of your return
Is closed know it will come
Away with sadness
I want your love and passion
I want your tenderness
I want everything you have got

A prayer of love, forever
A prayer of passion and tenderness
A prayer of love, hoping in miracles
Inside of us, only us
Inside of us

lyrics
Fly through the darkness
I feel cold, deceitful shadows
The desire sparked at the bottom
A void in the soul becoming
A taste of bitter, a taste of dark

We must come out of the shadows, intrigues and words
Give your heart, don’t despair, and fly through the darkness

I also feel it, I am also afraid
The dream is trembling with my fear
Moments of loss, moments of fear
When hopes roll in dust

We have to come out of the shadows, of intrigues and words
Give your heart, don’t despair, and fly through the darkness
We have to come out of the shadows, of intrigues and words
Give your heart, don’t despair, and fly through the darkness

But where to?
I don’t know, at this moment, every instance is a mistake
Silence whispers in me: don’t stay alone

I also feel it, I am also afraid
Don’t stay alone

As forgiveness approaches
Clouds embrace the return
Do not stray, you’re the same
Even if someone breaks you

Lord, may Your voice lead us
Through the darkness in us
Give us a gift, work a wonder, return love
Love, please

Love, please, may your voice lead us
Through the darkness in us
Give us a gift, work a wonder, stand by us

Love, please, may your voice lead us
Through the darkness in us
Give us a gift, work a wonder, stand by us
Keep the love

lyrics
Horehronie
When the sun goes down in Horehronie
I want to sing, die and live
When the sun goes down in Horehronie
I wish I could get closer to the sky

I’m lying on the grass and dreaming
Of what, I don’t even know
In the breeze that gently sways me
When the sun is at its lowest point

The most beautiful trees are in Horehronie
A silent brotherhood is telling that
I come back here when I feel sad
The trees are saying: shake it off

I’m lying on the grass and dreaming
Of what, I don’t even know
In the breeze that gently sways me
When the sun is at its lowest point

Ah… hallelujah…

When the sun goes down in Horehronie
Out there somewhere far away our bell is ringing
When it hurts, let it hurt
One day it will vanish in the black mountain

I’m lying on the grass and dreaming
My eyes are crying softly
In the breeze that gently sways me
When the sun is at its lowest point

Ah… ah… ah… ah…

I’m lying on the grass and dreaming
My eyes are crying softly
In the breeze that gently sways me
When the sun is at its lowest point

The most beautiful trees are in Horehronie

lyrics
I’m still alive
No, nothing can touch me, I’ve seen what I can be
Lonely I’ve walked through the fire, but I’m still alive
(No, nothing can touch me, I’ve seen what I can be) I’m still alive
(Lonely I’ve walked through the fire)

Would you climb up a mountain?
Would you battle the ocean?
Would you give this to lose it all?

I believe in my life and try to learn every lesson
Now I see what I’ve fighted for
When the road’s not too wide (Not too wide)
Then trust the heart never lies (Heart never lies)

No, nothing can touch me, I’ve seen what I can be
Lonely I’ve walked through the fire, but I’m still alive
(No, nothing can touch me, I’ve seen what I can be) I’m still alive
(Lonely I’ve walked through the fire)

If you lost all meaning, no more truth to believe in
Will the light inside be great?
But if you shine like a diamond, don’t get caught in the moment
Never letting your prayers slip away

When the road’s not too wide (Not too wide)
Then trust the heart never lies (Heart never lies)

No, nothing can touch me, I’ve seen what I can be
Lonely I’ve walked through the fire, but I’m still alive

(No, nothing can touch me)
(I’ve seen what I can be) I’m still alive
(Lonely I’ve walked through the fire)

(No, nothing can touch me) Nothing can touch me
(I’ve seen what I can be) No no no no no
(Lonely I’ve walked through the fire) I’m still alive

(No, nothing can touch me) I’m still alive
(I’ve seen what I can be) I feel alive
(Lonely I’ve walked through the fire)

(No, nothing can touch me) I’m still alive
(I’ve seen what I can be) I’m still alive
(Lonely I’ve walked through the fire) But I’m still alive

lyrics
Don’t close your eyes
(God save me)

Hey, where is the way to heaven’s hell
That’s what I ask when I feel broken

Look around what’s happening abounds
And listen to the frequency of a sound
Of the beat, of a heartbeat, of your death beat

Don’t close your eyes
And pray all the night
Try to call all angels
To save our lives

How do you feel now?
After all fails in love
Embraced by devil’s arms

Look around what’s happening abounds
And listen to the frequency of a sound
Of the beat, of a heartbeat, of your death beat

Don’t close your eyes
And pray all the night
Try to call all angels
To save our lives

Let me get out of here
Let me get out of here
Let me get out of here
Let me get out of here

Save me

Don’t close your eyes (Stay awake)
And pray all the night (Say your prayer now)
Try to call all angels (Angels above)
To save our lives (Save our lives)

Don’t close your eyes (Don’t close your eyes)
To save our lives
