History
Slovenia has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 18 times, debuting at the 1993 contest after coming first the qualification round “Kvalifikacija za Millstreet”, which was actually hosted in Slovenia itself, and competing in every year since, with the exceptions of 1994 and 2000, after poor results prevented Slovenia from competing.
Slovenia’s best position was 7th, when Darja Švajger sang “Prisluhni mi” at the Eurovision Song Contest 1995, and in 2001 when Nuša Derenda sang “Energy”. Darja Švajger has represented the country twice, in 1995 and 1999.
However, since the introduction of semi-finals at Eurovision in 2004 Slovenia’s record at Eurovision has been poor; for 5 years the Slovene entry was relegated to the semi-finals. However, in 2007, Alenka Gotar progressed Slovenia to the final for the first time with the song “Cvet z juga”. At the final she came 15th. Slovenia qualified for the final again in 2011 with Maja Keuc’s “No One”. She eventually placed 13th, Slovenia’s best ranking since 2002. However, her 96 points are the most points Slovenia has ever received in the final (Alenka Gotar in 2007 received more points in the semi-final than Maja Keuc, but she performed in a field of 28 countries, while Keuc performed in a field of 19 countries.
Slovenia had previously been represented at the contest as Yugoslavia between 1961 and 1991.The Slovene national final to select their entry is EMA, broadcast, along with Eurovision, by Radiotelevizija Slovenija (RTV SLO).

1993

Slovenia made its debut to the Eurovision Song Contest in 1993, having previously competed as part of Yugoslavia. EMA 1993, the national final, was held on 27 February 1993 at the RTVSLO TV studios in the Slovene capital of Ljubljana. The show was hosted by Tajda Lekše, and the winner was decided by the votes of 12 regional juries. The winner of the contest was the 1X Band with the song “Tih deževen dan” (A quiet rainy day), and became the first independent Slovene Eurovision entry.
Kvalifikacija za Millstreet (Qualification for Millstreet) was held by RTVSLO in their TV studios in Ljubljana on 3 April 1993. Seven countries competed for the three spots in the final. Slovenia received 53 points, placing 1st in the contest and qualified to the final of the contest, along with former Yugoslavian states Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia.
Slovenia received 9 points, receiving 4 points from Italy, 3 points from Sweden, and 1 point each from Malta and Bosnia and Herzegovina, placing 22nd in a field of 25.

lyrics
Quiet rainy day
Quiet rainy day, I close my eyes, travel far away
I paint a shade over past days and vanish away

How well I merge with this world that dazes me
How I’m absorbed in time that doesn’t exist

What would the world be without dreams
(What would)
When good luck squanders?
What would time be without dreams
(What would)
Life would be in vain

What would the world be without dreams
(What would)
When good luck squanders?
What would time be without dreams
Time without dreams

The blue sky there in the distance the bell is heard
In the morning breeze another miser follows me

How well I merge with this world that dazes me
How I’m absorbed in time that doesn’t exist

What would the world be without dreams
(What would)
When good luck squanders?
What would time be without dreams
(What would)
Life would be in vain

What would the world be without dreams
(What would)
When good luck squanders?
What would time be without dreams
Time without dreams

lyrics
Listen to me
Listen to me, look at me embraced
Trust me, when the night hides you
Admit, that you too
Would kiss the sun
And dream

You are in me, you’re accompanying me in the wind
Now, only your voice
Is waking up
You are woven in a ray
You are like a night, touch of stars
You hide glimmering in me

Let’s trust, that there is just one sky
You are in it, my traces are within you
Let’s confess, what we keep in us
Everything is verse, everything is a touch of love

We pray for time
Paths, moments of joy
We plea for this night
This dream of eternity
There’s me and you in it

Let’s trust, that there is just one sky
You are in it, my traces are within you
Let’s confess, what we keep in us
Everything is verse, everything is a touch of love
Everything is verse, everything is a touch of love

lyrics
The day of the most beautiful dream
A sleepy sun tells me that you are here
And the moon above me, greets me in dream

The first blossom and the May’s first sky
The most beautiful gardens, are hidden in love

Because this is the day of the most beautiful dream
That will last for ever
Heartbeat leads me to the place where love is real
And if someone steels me love
Steels my heart
But without heart, one cannot be in love

The first blossom and the May’s first sky
The most beautiful gardens, are hidden in love

Because this is the day of the most beautiful dream
That will last for ever
Heartbeat leads me to a place where love is real

Because this is the day of the most beautiful dream
That will last for ever
Heartbeat leads me to the place where love is real
And if someone steels me love
Steels my heart
But without heart, one cannot be in love
But without heart, one cannot be in love

lyrics
Waken now
Somewhere at the town’s end
There an old house sleeps
Golden moon, counting, counting all her bitter tears

Her pure spirit’s calling, calling out for help:

“O Prince Charming, where is your ever magic kiss?”

Waken now, my good Prince
I would gladly give you all
All my dreams and, all my youth
Break the spell of, the fairy tale

Waken now, my good Prince
I would gladly give you all
All my dreams and, all my youth
Break the spell of, the fairy tale

Waken now, my good Prince
I would gladly give you all
All my dreams and, all my youth
Break the spell of, the fairy tale

Waken now

Every morning dawning, dawning over tears
The pure heart sees all, all that the eye ignores

lyrics
Won’t the gods set me free
Now all there is left for me
Are lost hopes and memories
Still the vision of her face
Never fades away, it shines each day

I’ll wait for a thousand years
I’ll be calling on my knees
Can they all see my tears
I’m crying to the skies, I love her

Won’t the gods set me free
Will they hear my plea
Will they save me
I can’t live without her love
And my heart lays down and dies

Can they all hear my tears
I’m crying to the skies, I love her

Won’t the gods set me free
Will they hear my plea
Will they save me
I can’t live without her love

Oh… (won’t the gods set me free)
Won’t, won’t, won’t, won’t…
Will they hear my plea
Will they save me
I can’t live without her love
And my heart lays down and dies
And my heart lays down and dies

1999

Darja Švajger (born 1965 in Maribor, SR Slovenia SFR Yugoslavia). Darja is one of the country’s most popular singers but perhaps most known internationally for representing Slovenia in the Eurovision Song Contest twice.

Peterca and Fajon again wrote a ballad for her, entitled “For A Thousand Years”. The composer stated that he was inspired by the city of New York during his staying there for four months. RTV had high hopes and indeed the song was in the first place during the first minutes of the voting – it even got a 12 points high score from Ireland. The song scored 50 points and ranked 11th among 23 entries.
lyrics
For a thousand years
Teardrops in my eyes, a dance of glistening rain
Falling from the sky, a carpet of the stars
Clouds of tenderness are fleeing in the light
Now it’s here, the light for a thousand years

I tremble in your eyes, I tremble in your palms
Lie inside you deep, in dreams of yours I sleep
Carress you with my eyes and love you with my hands
Yes, I feel the light for a thousand years

I know you are my love
A touch, a kiss, your heart is mine
I know the light is always here
We kiss each other in its shine

I tremble in your eyes, I tremble in your palms
Lie inside you deep, in dreams of yours I sleep
Carress you with my eyes and love you with my hands
Yes, I feel the light for a thousand years

I know you are my love
A touch, a kiss, your heart is mine
I know the light is always here
We kiss each other in its shine

lyrics
Energy
Energy – oh… what you do to me
Your rhythm runs right through me, you’re my destiny
My whole life is one big fantasy
And yet the closer that I get, you’re further away

Energy – I feel such energy
Electric runs right through me, I’m in ecstasy
Your caress, the sweetness on your lips
But the closer that I get, you’re drifting away

With every heartbeat, I’m electrified
With just one look, your body moves me, moves me
If for one second you’d remember me
Then I would break free from these chains that are wrapped around me

Energy – I feel such energy
Your rhythm runs right through me, I’m in ecstasy
Your caress, the sweetness on your lips
But the closer that I get, you’re drifting away

Oh energy – I feel such energy
Electric runs right through me, you’re my destiny, oh…
My whole life is one big fantasy, oh…
And all I am means nothing ’til you’re here with me

Energy

Only love
A heart that’s big as the world
A smile and a sparkle in the eyes
And the word you know so well

In life there are many roads
Don’t look for happiness where there is none
Just listen to what your heart says

I can offer you only love
One and only hope
Just look me in the eyes, and you’re carefree easily
I know you feel the same

What you want is not a sin
That’s love in your eyes

You know me better than you think
Even though you’re shutting your eyes
When you look at me you see what you are

You’ve been searching for so long
For what you tought was right
But in the end you’ll choose only one

I can offer you only love
One and only hope
Just look me in the eyes, and you’re carefree easily
I know you feel the same

Whoa… I can offer you only love
One and only hope
Just look me in the eyes, and you’re carefree easily

I know you feel the same
Oh yeah, I know you feel the same

lyrics
Nanana
It was a warm midsummer night
He just came and made me feel alright
For one look (yeah, he’s got the look)
For one touch (she really wanted him so much)
Then he grabbed his old guitar, began to play

He sang to me nanananana
So naturally, it set my heart on fire
He truly was my one desire
Oh, baby how he was, nanananana

He sang to me nanananana
My God, he couldn’t get me any higher
Was not supposed to be a liar
But babe, that’s what he was, nanananana

What a warm midsummer night
I just wanted him to hold me real tight
For one look (yeah, he’s got the look)
For one touch (she really wanted him so much)
Then he grabbed his old guitar, began to play

He sang to me nanananana
So naturally, it set my heart on fire
He truly was my one desire
Oh, baby how he was, nanananana

He sang to me nanananana
My God, he couldn’t get me any higher
Was not supposed to be a liar
But babe, that’s what he was, nanananana

For one look
For one touch
Then he grabbed his old guitar, began to play
He sang to me nanana

He sang to me nanananana
So naturally it set my heart on fire
He truly was my one desire
Oh, baby how he was, nanananana

He sang to me nanananana
My God, he couldn’t get me any higher
Was not supposed to be a liar
But babe, that’s what he was, nanananana

Was not supposed to be a liar
But baby, how he was

2004

EMA 2004 held on 15 February 2004 in Hall A – Gospodarsko Razstavišče, Ljubljana.Platin (Duo Platin) is a Slovenian music duet. The singers are Simon Platin and Diana Platin. They married in Turkey, while they were representing Slovenia in Eurovision Song Contest 2004.
Like in many previous editions of festival EMA were jury and televote results completely different. It caused a lot controversy, because televote favorite Natalija Verboten, gets 0 points from jury. It happened also in 2003 with Bepop, in 2002 with Karmen Stavec, and in 1999 with Tinkara Kovač. All this entries finished runner up, or escaped second round of televote, just because jury points value more than televote.
All this controversy resulted in following edition of EMA. In this edition was winner chosen solely by televote.

lyrics
Stay forever
Ooh…
Hey, yeah, yeah

Come on, let’s fly away, girl
Up on cloud number nine I’d wish to flow
You’re my most precious pearl
Waiting for you, that’s all I need to know

Wait and see how it’s gonna be
Hold my hand, just don’t let go
Birds of the feather flock together
But time will tell, people say so

Stay forever and ever
You will always be my baby
Stay forever
I’ll never hurt you
I won’t make you cry
No, no, no

Stay forever
No matter what may happen
Don’t give up on me
Do whatever
I’ll never let go
I will catch your fall, oh…

Through the sunny and dark side (of life)
Feelings like this are made (to survive)
What the rest of the world thinks (doesn’t matter)
Because we know it better

Stay forever and ever
You will always be my baby
Stay forever
I’ll never hurt you
I won’t make you cry
No, no, no

Stay forever
No matter what may happen
Don’t give up on me
Do whatever
I’ll never let go
I will catch your fall, oh…

Stay forever and ever
You will always be my baby, baby
Stay forever
I’ll never hurt you
I won’t make you cry

lyrics
Stop
I rest on a dusty wall
With all might, I resist it
I knock and hope that you don’t hear me
You open the door, as if you don’t care
Why are we both pretending?
You’ve been marked by his kiss

Bind my hands, so I can drown
In your embrace because of lies I bleed out
Tell me stop when I look you in the eyes
At least tonight

Bind my hands, so I can drown
In your embrace because of lies I bleed out
Tell me stop when I look you in the eyes
Protect me at least tonight

For long you’ve been hiding with kisses in your hands
With a heavy heart you doubt us
Brush me off like dust, destroy everything through your fingers
So I don’t fall because of hope

Bind my hands, so I can drown
In your embrace because of lies I bleed out
Tell me stop when I look you in the eyes
Protect me at least tonight, protect me

Lalala lajla…
Lalala lajla lajla…

2006

Slovenia chose its entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2006 on 29 January in their selection.EMA veteran Saša Lendero and her ethnic dance song “Mandoline”, won both the televoting and SMS votes while in the end, the jury decided the outcome and Anžej Dežan with the song Plan B won the competition, causing much controversy. This was second time in 3 years that voting jury expelled the televoting winner from their votes. Many polemics and discussions were raised after this – people and media wondering if jury did this on purpose. More dispute was caused when accusations were made that the song was a copy of a song called Santa Maria sung by Austrian singer Simone, therefore breaking the contest rules. The European Broadcasting Union, however, did not see it as a copy, and therefore the song was not disqualified. The song is written by Urša Vlašič and composed by Matjaž Vlašič.
The song, performed in English in Athens as “Mr Nobody”, did not come in the top 10 in the semi-final, finishing 16th with 49 points, therefore not qualifying for the final.
18 year old Anžej Dežan born on the 17 June 1987 in Celje, will be one of the youngest performers in Athens.

lyrics
Mr Nobody
You, you came to me one night
Just like a ray of light
I thought we’d be forever

Now it’s so clear to me
I’m part of history
You’re leaving me in sorrow

So deeply, so badly, you’re hurting me

Tell me, who’s that lucky hero
Sleeping tightly on your pillow?
Ah… tell me, will it be forever?
‘Cause when you look at me
I’m Mister Nobody
It’s just a game you play
Can’t let you walk away

Like a stranger passing by
With no more tears to dry
You’re leaving me in sorrow

So deeply, so badly, you’re hurting me

Tell me, who’s that lucky hero
Sleeping tightly on your pillow?
Ah… tell me, will it be forever?
‘Cause when you look at me
I’m Mister Nobody
It’s just a game you play
Can’t let you walk away

Tell me, who’s that lucky hero
Sleeping tightly on your pillow?
Ah… tell me, will it be forever?
‘Cause when you look at me
I’m Mister Nobody
It’s just a game you play
Can’t let you walk away

lyrics
Flower of the south
Take, take this flower in your hand
Don’t ask how I’ll manage without you
Put it on your heart
Let it remind you of me

My white flower
My faraway world
Come, return, be mine again
Everything of me is forever yours in this lifetime
Flower of the south, still close to the sea
I’m waiting for you
I’m still waiting for you

(My white flower)

I love something that is not there anymore
You’re just my vision from times past

My white flower (My white flower, my white flower)
My faraway world (My white flower, my white flower)
Come, return, be mine again
Everything of me is forever yours in this lifetime
Flower of the south, still close to the sea
I’m waiting for you

(My white flower)
(My faraway world)
(Come, return, be mine again)
Everything of me is forever yours in this lifetime
Flower of the south, still close to the sea
I’m waiting for you
I’m still waiting for you

lyrics
To hell with it
On the floor by myself, the last tear for you in my eyes
I whipe the traces that were left behind by defeat
You without words, in a moment you destroyed my world
Now I’m gathering all the shadows of love to throw them in your face

To hell with everything that’s between us
I’m throwing your pictures on the floor
To hell with it, I’m moving on on my own
Tearing all the memories so it’ll be over soon

I’m not letting you look me in my eyes ever again
Now there’s nothing in me for you
You’re a stranger to me, whom I don’t recognise on the street
When I see you, I pass you, turning my head the other way

To hell with everything that’s between us
I’m throwing your pictures on the floor
To hell with it, I’m moving on on my own
Tearing all the memories so it’ll be over soon

To hell with everything that’s between us
I know tears for you are a waste
Now there’s only drama between us
Which won’t return my stolen dreams
(My stolen dreams) Dreams

You broke me, I admit
But I’m moving on
By myself into every new day
I’m stronger than ever before

To hell with everything that’s between us
I’m throwing your pictures on the floor
To hell with it, I’m moving on on my own
Tearing all the memories so it’ll be over soon

To hell with everything that’s between us
I know tears for you are a waste
Now there’s only drama between us
Which won’t return my stolen dreams

Love symphony
Imagine you and me
We’re flying above the sea
Feeling free in this love symphony

Imagine you and me
We’re flying above the sea
Feeling free in this love symphony

Out of time, out of place
Somewhere inside my universe
Where you live your dreams

Imagine you and me
We’re flying above the sea
Feeling free eternally
Like in this love symphony

lyrics
Popular folk rock
Let there be (let there be, let there be) a change of the scene
Let everybody (let everybody, let everybody) go crazy about this sound
Let it run through the veins, let it strike right into the heart
Popular folk rock

Polka is the queen in the Slovenian land
It brings out dance, shrieks and laughter
Rock is the king of partying, sharp, but sincere
Hot like summer, colourful like autumn

But just one drop of creativity
Hides polka into a wild rhythm

Let there be (let there be, let there be) a shift in the mind
Let it be (let it be, let it be) like a positive shock
The feeling is right, let everybody be overwhelmed by
Popular folk rock

These country melodies bring out enthusiasm
A feeling of patriotism, love and pride
And rock spreads energy through guitar strings
Throughout the land, like a fire

But just a tiny bit of imagination
Hides rock into the polka rhythm

Let there be (let there be, let there be) a change of the scene
Let everybody (let everybody, let everybody) go crazy about this sound
Let it run through the veins, let it strike right into the heart
Popular folk rock

Let there be (let there be, let there be) a shift in the mind
Let it be (let it be, let it be) like a positive shock
The feeling is right, let everybody be overwhelmed by
Popular folk rock

Let there be (let there be, let there be) a change of the scene,
Let everybody (let everybody, let everybody) go crazy about this sound.
Let it run through the veins, let it strike right into the heart
Popular folk rock

Slovenia chose Maja Keuc as their representative in Düsseldorf in 2011, singing “No one”. Having not made it into the grand final since the 2007 contest, Slovenia’s hopes were on Maja to get through. Slovenia performed in the second semi final on May 12, 2011 in position 13. Maja performed an extremely good number, winning the crowds over during rehearsals and also in the semi final. After voting, Slovenia qualified for the grand final on Saturday May 14 with a respectable 3rd place and 112 points. Slovenia drew position 20 in the grand final, one of the better positions, and Maja consistently performed very well again song wise. At the conclusion of voting, Slovenia ended in 13th place with 96 points. This result gives Slovenia its third best effort in the Eurovision Song Contest, the best result being 7th place in 1995 and 2001, while the second being the 10th place in 1997.

lyrics
No one
And you came to me one night
Like a morning light
Just to hold me tight
Then you left and I was so alone
Saying I should have known
You’re no good for me

There’s no reason I should cry
No, no baby, I’ll survive
I don’t care, I don’t care

No one will ever hold you tight
No one will ever love you like
Just no one like I do
There is no one, no one

No one will ever treat you right
You’re the one who’s never satisfied
There is no one like I, like I am

I can feel what you’re looking for
I’m not that girl no more
I’m not made of stone
I’m gonna stand on my own
Not gonna break me down
No one will stop me now

No… no no no no no…
‘Cause life is kind without you
And I know I can make it through without you

(Life goes all around)
Round and round and round
I feel love for sure
(And it’s gonna get you)

(Life goes all around)
Spinning all around
Now you want me, don’t you?

No one will ever hold you tight (Hold you tight)
No one will ever love you like (Love you like)
Now you’re back, I can feel your love
Oh yeah, I’m never gonna let you

No one will ever treat you right (Treat you right)
You’re the one who’s never satisfied (Satisfied)
After all, you can fall
And there is no one you can reach to

No one will ever, ever love you
No one will ever, ever touch you
No one will ever, ever hold
Turn around now, just turn around now
If you love me, yeah
No one like me, no one, no one

lyrics
I believe
Ah… ah… ah…
I yearn from the depths, I draw the sun across the sky
Through my dreams, just for him, I cast light onto his shadows
Which say farewell, without a holey memory
As if draining the sands of time through my hands

I believe that we will catch each other again
And that yesterday will return for good with a river of light
Even the song will find its way to the rhymes if I go after him

Ah… ah… ah… ah…

I feel I’m going down to the bottom, a silent voice is singing in a minor key
But my white flags will not be blowing in the wind

I believe that we will catch each other again
And that yesterday will return for good with a river of light
A new day is hungry for the sun and sincere

Ooh… (Because I don’t give up until the end)
(Because I don’t give up until the end)
Because I don’t give up until the end
I survive only in my own way
By yearning, oh… (Because I don’t give up until the end)
