History
Ukraine has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest ten times, debuting in 2003 with a 14th place finish for the popular singer Oleksandr Ponomaryov. The country won in their second year of Eurovision being represented by the famous singer Ruslana at the 2004 contest, and finished in joint 19th place in the 2005 contest, for which the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, was the host. Ukraine has never been eliminated in the semifinals, and has therefore never missed a final.
Natsionalna Telekompaniya Ukrainy (NTU), the Ukrainian broadcaster, announced in 2009 that it would be participating in the Eurovision Song Contest 2009, despite rumours that the broadcaster would withdraw due to financial difficulties.

2003

“Hasta la Vista” was the Ukrainian entry to the Eurovision Song Contest 2003, their debut entry, composed by Svika Pick and Mirit Shem Or and sung by Oleksandr Ponomaryov in English. The song received 30 points, placing 14th in a field of 26.

lyrics
Hasta la vista
Don’t try to deny
I can see in your eyes
All the love you’d like
To hide away

So don’t cry, say goodbye
And go on with your lies
I know you are mine
You’ll come back someday

Hasta la vista, baby
Baby, so long
Hasta la vista, baby
Oh go, you are so…

Hasta la vista, baby
Baby, so long
Hasta la vista, baby
Oh go, you are so wrong

Can’t you see the signs?
I am yours, you are mine
You are sayin’ goodbye
I know you are

Just try and rely
To the voice of your heart
Your tears in your eyes
Are so bright as stars

Hasta la vista, baby
Baby, so long
Hasta la vista, baby
Oh go, you are so wrong

You want to go
You say goodbye
You’d like to fly
Up to the sky

But I don’t know (I don’t know)
So tell me why (tell me why)
You always cry (cry)
Just tell me why

Hasta la vista…
(Hasta la vista)

Hasta la vista, baby
Baby, so long
Hasta la vista, baby
Oh go, you are so…

Hasta la vista, baby
Baby, so long
Hasta la vista, baby
Oh go, you are so wrong

Goodbye, you are so…
Hasta la vista
(Hasta la vista…)

lyrics
Wild dances
Just maybe I’m crazy
The world spins round and round and round
Shee-ree-kee-die, shee-ree-kee-dam-day
Shee-ree-kee-die, shee-kee-ree-a-dam-da

I want you to want me
As I dance round and round and round
Shee-ree-kee-die, shee-ree-kee-dam-day
Shee-ree-kee-die, shee-kee-ree-a-dam-da

Forever and ever
Go, go, go, wild dancers

Die-na, die-na, wanna be loved
Die-na, gonna take my wild chances
Die-na, die-na, freedom above
Die-na, die-na-day, I’m wild dancin’

Hey

Probably, in vain
I was too obedient
Hey, shee-kee-die, shee-ree-kee-dam-day
Shee-ree-kee-die, shee-kee-ree-a-dam-da

For you and for myself
I’ll spread out the whole sky
Hey, dam-day
Shee-ree-kee-die, shee-kee-ree-a-dam-da

I will set the fire without any sorrow
Go, go, go, wild dancers

Die-na, die-na, wanna be loved
Die-na, gonna take my wild chances
Die-na, die-na, freedom above
Die-na, die-na-day, I’m wild dancin’

Hey-ey-ey…

Dance forever, come and be mine
Dance together, till the end of time
Dance together
Go, go, go, wild dancers

Die-na, die-na, wanna be loved
Die-na, gonna take my wild chances
Die-na, die-na, freedom above
Die-na, die-na-day, I’m wild dancin’

Hey, hey

2005

Ukraine was represented in the Eurovision Song Contest 2005 by GreenJolly with the song “Razom nas bahato”.For the first time ever Ukraine held a national final. 527 songs were received by NTU.
the hip-hop entry “Razom nas bahato” (Together We Are Many) by the band GreenJolly, was controversially voted the winner, beating Ani Lorak into second place. The controversial decision to add the entrants into the final was initiated by Ukrainian Vice Prime Minister on Humanitarian Policy Mykola Tomenko. While he tried to justify his decision in the contest aftermath arguing that it needed to reflect the dramatic changes in the society due to the recent Orange Revolution, the perceived government intervention into a musical contest attracted much criticism. Indeed, for many weeks the song, which almost certainly owes its victory to its familiarity as an unofficial anthem of the Orange Revolution, appeared to be in danger of falling foul of two criteria for eligibility as an entry in the Eurovision Song Contest. Firstly, it was openly derivative of an older revolutionary song, and therefore was arguably not an original composition, and secondly, the lyrics could be classed as political propaganda, especially since they mentioned President Viktor Yushchenko by name. However, after substantial revisions were made, the song was deemed a legitimate entry by the EBU. The song is written by Oleg Lanjak and composed by Roman Kalin.

lyrics
Together we are many
Together we are many, we can’t be defeated
Together we are many, we can’t be defeated
Together we are many, we can’t be defeated
Together we are many, we can’t be defeated

We won’t stand this (No), revolution is on
‘Cause lies be the weapon of mass destruction
All together we’re one, all together we’re strong
God be my witness, we’ve waited too long

Falsifications (No), machinations (No)
Little understandings (No), no to lies
We trust (Yes), we can (Yes)
I know we will win (Yes, yes)

Together we are many, we can’t be defeated
Together we are many, we can’t be defeated
Together we are many, we can’t be defeated
Together we are many, we can’t be defeated

What you wanna say to your daughters and sons
You know the battle is not over till the battle is won
Truth be the weapon, we ain’t scared of the guns
We stay undefeated, ’cause together we’re one

We – already together, we – forever
We – Ukrainians, sons and daughters
It’s now or never, enough of waiting
Together we are many, we can’t be defeated

Together we are many (Together we are many)
We can’t be defeated (We can’t be defeated)
Together we are many (Together we are many)
We can’t be defeated (We can’t be defeated)

Together we are many (If we are together)
We can’t be defeated (We are invincible)
Together we are many (Our strength lies in our unity)
We can’t be defeated (Our strength lies in our unity)

Together we are many (The united people)
We can’t be defeated (Will never be defeated)
Together we are many
(Together we are many, we can’t be defeated)

Together we are many (Together)
We can’t be defeated (We can’t be defeated)
Together we are many (Together)
We can’t be defeated (Together we are many)

Together we are many (Together)
We can’t be defeated (We can’t be defeated)
Together we are many (Together)
We can’t be defeated (Together we are many)

Together we are many (Together)
We can’t be defeated

Show me your love
Hi, baby, here I am
Feel like I’m born again
You see it in my eyes, my heart is on fire
Don’t hide your love away, don’t wait another day

Show me your love, show me how much you care
Talk to my heart, whisper my name
Show me your love, I need you more than air
You’ll be my part, that’s why I came

I love the way you shine
Love when you cross the line
Just give me one more sign, show me your desire
Don’t hide your love away, don’t wait another day

Show me your love, show me how much you care
Talk to my heart, whisper my name
Show me your love, I need you more than air
You’ll be my part, that’s why I came

Show me your love, show me how much you care
Talk to my heart, whisper my name
Show me your love, I need you more than air
You’ll be my part, that’s why I came

Lai la dada dala dei… lai dada…
Lai la dada dala dei… lai dada…
Lai la dada dala dei… lai dada…
Lei da… lei da…

Show me your love, show me how much you care
Talk to my heart, whisper my name
Show me your love, I need you more than air
You’ll be my part, that’s why I came

Show me your love, show me how much you care
Talk to my heart, whisper my name
Show me your love, I need you more than air
You’ll be my part, that’s why I came

Don’t hide your love away
Show feelings every day

Show me your love, show me how much you care
Talk to my heart, whisper my name
Show me your love, I need you more than air
You’ll be my part
That’s why, that’s why, that’s why I came

lyrics
Shady lady
You’ve been my superstar
But it’s not what you are
You’ve been my super hero
Since I’ve lived in your shade
Every step that I made
Brought me nothing but zero

But I’m staying alive
And now I’m changin’ my life
With a burning desire
No one knows who I am
But I don’t give a damn
Gonna set you on fire

Shady lady – I’m gonna strike like thunder
Are you ready? I wanna make you wonder
Rollin’ steady – I’m gonna make you shiver
My heart is burning

Shady lady – I’m gonna strike like thunder
Are you ready? I wanna make you wonder
Rollin’ steady – I’m gonna make you shiver
My heart is burning now

Just take a look at me
Deep inside and you’ll see
All I kept under cover
There is one thing I bet
You’re about to regret
I’m no longer your lover

I’ve just turned one more page
I belong to the stage
Baby, don’t call me baby

Shady lady – I’m gonna strike like thunder
Are you ready? I wanna make you wonder
Rollin’ steady – I’m gonna make you shiver
My heart is burning now

(Shady lady)
(Shady lady)

I wanna light you up and leave you alone
I am a brand new star that you’ve never known
I wanna light you up and leave you alone
I am a brand new star that you’ve never known

(Shady lady)
(Are you ready?)

Shady lady – I’m gonna strike like thunder
Are you ready? I wanna make you wonder
Rollin’ steady – I’m gonna make you shiver
My heart is burning now

lyrics

Be my valentine
You are sexy – bom

You are so sexy – bom
Gon’ make me crazy – bom
We’re gonna do the bom bom
Ain’t that amazing – bom

I’m very busy – bom
It’s not so easy – bom
I’m gonna tease you – bom bom
Without a reason – bom

I’ll call you on the phone
You speak in monotone
Don’t wanna be alone
Because I’m crazy – bom

Baby, baby you’re so fine
Be my, be my valentine
Baby, baby you’re so fine
Be my, be my valentine

My pride and prejudice
I will just reminisce
These are the things you can’t miss
Come on, give me a kiss

There’s nothing dangerous
I know what’s waitin’ on us
We’ll keep each other restless
Oh boy, you look impressed

The charm that I possess
Will put you to the test
To satisfy my interest
Come over, be my guest

I’ll show you to my nest
You’re under arrest
The others may be jealous
‘Cause you’re the one who’s blessed

Baby, baby you’re so fine
Be my, be my valentine
Baby, baby you’re so fine
Be my, be my valentine

Yeah, aha…
You are sexy – bom
You are sexy – bom
Really crazy – bom
You and you and you
Anti-crisis – bom

Baby, I can save your world
I’m your anti-crisis girl
Baby, I can save your world
I’m your anti-crisis girl

Baby, I can save the world
I’m your anti-crisis girl
Baby, I can save the world
I’m your anti-crisis girl
Baby, I can save the world
I’m your anti-crisis girl

2010

The Ukraine entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2010 was originally selected internally by the Ukrainian national broadcaster National Television Company of Ukraine (NTU). Vasyl Lazarovych was the original artist, select in December 2009. On 6 March a national final was held to select the Eurovision song to be performed. Out of five entries the song “I Love You” was the winner.
However on 17 March it was announced that a new NTU management would hold another national final on 20 March to select a new Ukrainian entry after objections to the internal selection of Lazarovych as the country’s entrant. The winner of the new national selection was Alyosha, who will represent Ukraine with her song “Sweet People”, which replaced her song “To Be Free” due to allegations of plagiarism and evidence that the song was publicly available two years prior.
The replacement song, “Sweet People”, was revealed on 24 March.

lyrics
Sweet people
Oh, sweet people
What have we done?
Tell me what is happening?
For all that we’ve built
Tumbles and is gone

Oh, sweet people
Have you no love for mankind?
Must you go on killing
Just to pass the time?

The message is so true
The end is really near
All these feelings take me down
It steals the things so dear

Yes, the message is so real
Don’t turn all the earth to stone
Because, because, because
This is your home

Oh, sweet people
What about our children?
In theatres and video games
They watch what we send to ruin

Oh, sweet people
What senseless game
Have we all been playing?
No one but you to blame?

The message is so true
The end is really near
All these feelings take me down
It steals the things so dear

Yes, the message is so real
Don’t turn all the earth to stone
Because, because, because
This is your home

This is our home

2011

Ukraine participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 in Düsseldorf, Germany and selected their artist and song through a televised national final, organised by the Ukrainian broadcaster, the NTU. After a controversial selection procedure Mika Newton and her song “Angels” were declared Ukraine’s entry.
35 artists were chosen after castings concluded on 21 August. The selected artists include Verka Serduchka (who was automatically qualified for the final, who represented Ukraine at the Eurovision Song Contest 2007, and Anastasia Prikhodko, who represented Russia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 in Moscow, as well as several past national final entrants. On 14 October, Verka Serduchka withdrew from the competition. NTU replaced Serduchka with Pavel Tabakov. However, just as in the previous year, the outcome of the final led to controversy and chaos; jury member Hanna Herman asked for the re-evaluation of the votes as rumors of miscounting votes swerved around. This led to a new final, scheduled to take place on March 3. Since most objections against the previous result revolved around artist being voted multiple times from the same phone numbers, in the new final only votes coming from unique phone numbers would be counted. The results were to be decided entirely by televoting.
New Final and decision to send Angels,Jamala (with the song “Smile”) was originally set to perform in the new final, but she withdrew from it on March 1 claiming that votes would again be rigged. Very soon afterwards Zlata Ognevich also withdrew, stating that she was due to take part in another television show that day. This left Mika Newton as the artist to represent Ukraine, but it remained unknown which song she would perform on Eurovision. On March 4 Newton and the competitions organizer NTU declared Angels would be sent to the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 “with better arrangements”. A new music video of the song was presented on March 15 featuring the revamped version.
Ukraine went through the second semi-final of the contest, on 12 May, eventually finishing in 4th place in the voting of the final on 14 May.

lyrics
Angel
When you look into my eyes
World becomes a better place
And you know deep inside
Love is taking all the space
Baby, I love you… and you?

We are birds, we fly so high and we are falling down
When I dream of you, my dream is so fearless
We are people of the planet, we live human lives
We are angels, we’re in danger, we are crystal white, crystal white

When you look into my eyes
Sun is touching mountain top
When you look into my eyes
It will never have to stop
Baby, I love you… and you?

We are birds, we fly so high and we are falling down
When I dream of you, my dream is so fearless
We are people of the planet, we live human lives
We are angels, we’re in danger, we are crystal white, crystal white

We are birds, we fly so high and we are falling down
When I dream of you, my dream is so fearless
We are people of the planet, we live human lives
We are angels, we’re in danger, we are crystal white, crystal white
